Surfer’s $100k bill after being paralysed
An Aussie surfer has detailed the harrowing moment he “heard the crack” after being slammed headfirst into a sandbar by a wave
The horrendous moment a Aussie was left paralysed has been recounted by the surfer who was dumped head first into a sandbar by a wave — and now faces a whopping $100,000 bill.
On January 26, 58-year-old Dean Amos — from Perth — was surfing at Secret Harbour on the city’s outer suburbs when a swell caught him off guard and he was slammed into the sandbar.
“I remember hearing the crack,” he told 7News.
The impact broke his neck and he was immediately paralysed.
Mr Amos was face down in the water and unable to move when fellow surfers realised he was in trouble and quickly came to his rescue.
The quick-thinking bystanders floated him back to shore, according to a GoFundMe organised by a friend.
“Secret Harbour’s amazing Surf Life Saving Club swung into action, stabilising his neck and calling paramedics,” the friend wrote.
The fundraising efforts are set to help make their home accessible so Mr Amos can be released from rehab to his new wife Becky.
“He just wants to be at home, he misses the little things,” his wife Becky told 7News.
The couple only recently bought their first home, and were in the process of renovating when the accident happened.
Now, the renovations will have to accommodate Mr Amos in a wheelchair which will become a costly exercise.
So far the bill is estimated to reach more than $100,000 in order to widen doorways and replace the kitchen and bathroom with accessible options.
“I mean, we haven’t even thought about hoists, wheelchairs, vehicle modifications. It makes your head spin,” Becky told 7News.
Works needed to make the home accessible for Mr Amos- according to the fundraiser- include:
-Internal building works to widen doorways
-Some walls to be knocked out
-Electrics & plumbing upgrade
-Design & install of an accessible kitchen
-Rip out & replace the bathroom with a larger wet-room
-Install hard-flooring throughout for wheelchair use
-Install hoist systems
-Widened driveway
-Improved paths
More Coverage
-Entrances ramped
-External doors widened.
The fundraiser has raised more than $10000 out of a $200000 goal.
