Surf legend Kelly Slater suffers embarrassing Oahu wipe out
Surfing legend Kelly Slater has shown he is human after all when he crashed and burned spectacularly at the World Cup of Surfing.
Kelly Slater is making a full charge at the Vans triple crown of surfing — but it turns out even the greatest of all time can be over eager.
Slater is competing in the Vans World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach in Oahu, but perhaps for the first time ever on the water, the 11-time world champion looked every bit of the 47 years he’s spent on this planet.
The surfing legend showed he is very much human when he spectacularly crashed and burned at the end of his round three heat.
Slater progressed to the round four heats when he took out his third round against Aussies Kyuss King and Stuart Kennedy – but his day wasn’t all good.
Slater was filmed eating a mouthful of sand as he exited the Hawaiian surf while trying to ride a wave all the way in.
It was a mistake he would come to regret.
Slater was seen losing his balance in the shallows before jumping off his board and trying to turn it into a run onto the shore.
Unfortunately he couldn’t pull the maneuver off and he tripped up and face planted in aggressive fashion.
As the tide took the swell back out to sea, a wiped-pout Slater washed up on shore and showed off for his giggling fans by waving his hands in the air in a mock celebration.
Slater will return for the fourth round of the event as early as Tuesday morning (AEDT) depending on the swell conditions.
He will also continue pushing for a spot on America’s surfing team for the 2020 Olympics when the surfing world championships are wrapped up at the Billabong Pipe Masters next week.
