Serial pest turns off Melbourne Cup on big screen

NOTORIOUS social media prankster Shammi Prasad has caused outrage over a bizarre Melbourne Cup prank that robbed fans a chance to watch Australia’s most iconic race.

The serial social media provoker left Cup fans fuming yesterday when he pulled the plug on the race that stops the nation.

The Facebook entertainer left punters seething at a Gold Coast tavern after he chose to execute his latest prank in the middle of Cross Counter’s victorious run in the $7.3 million Flemington classic.

Prasad deliberately turned off a projector inside the Parkwood Tavern in a bid to “stop the race that stops the nation”.

In a video posted on his Facebook page, which had more than 3 million views, Prasad shows off a TV remote while casually sitting down inside the venue’s main lounge. He proceeds to outline his plan to kill the broadcast in the middle of the race.

The footage shows the Gold Coast local grabbing a chair and casually climbing up to the projector to shut down the Cup.

After the projection screen flashes blank, exasperated members of the crowd can be heard angrily calling for the Cup to be switched back on.

After taking a bow and walking away calmly, Prasad was accosted by a member of the public trying to snatch the remote back off him as he made his getaway towards the nearest exit.

After being herded back into the building and surrendering his remote control, the aspiring funnyman calmly walked out as hotel staff moved to get the Melbourne Cup back on the big screen in time for the famous sprint down the Flemington straight.

A Tavern employee told the Gold Coast Bulletin Prasad’s video was not a fake.

The controversial entertainer has made headlines previously for pulling similar pranks on unsuspecting Australians caught up in his performances.

He snuck into music festival Splendour in the Grass in July by hiding inside a wheelie bin that was pushed inside the Byron Parklands facility and through a security checkpoint by a friend dressed up as a facility manager.

Prasad made international headlines in April for base jumping from the 50th floor of the Meriton high-rise in Southport on the Gold Coast before pulling his parachute and landing in a public space.

“Base jumping 50 stories from our room,” the caption on the post claimed.

“Told you I’m Superman.”

He first attracted fans on social media for a 2015 prank where he received public criticism over his treatment of his girlfriend at the time.
