Erin Molan has opened up on her recent split from her fiance, revealing a “cathartic” strategy she has used to cope with the ordeal.

The respected NRL presenter and radio host took to social media earlier this month to announce she and Sean Ogilvy had separated.

Molan has been engaged to homicide Detective Sean Ogilvy since 2017, and the couple welcomed daughter Eliza the following year.

“Some personal news. Sean and I have separated,” Molan’s now-deleted post reads.

“We are entirely committed to co-parenting our three-year-old daughter, who is the most important person in the world to both of us.

“Any breakdown of a family unit is incredibly difficult and we ask for privacy at this time – especially given the private approach that we have taken to our relationship.

“We won’t be making any further comment, Thank you.”

Speaking on her 2Day FM breakfast radio show on Thursday, Molan told co-hosts Dave Hughes and Ed Kavalee she had taken up a piece of their advice to help put the break-up behind her.

“When I first told you guys that my partner and I had separated, Hughesy you said one advantage to this — apart from a few others — is that you can listen to break-up songs and cry,” she said.

“I realised yesterday when I had an hour to myself that I hadn’t done that yet, so I put on break-up songs and it was amazing.

“It was so cathartic, is that the word?”

Molan and Ogilvy originally met during a night out at Coogee Pavilion, and revealed details of how the romance unfolded in an interview with 9 Honey in 2018.

“I like to say that Sean saw me and fell in love straight away and that was it. But I kind of saw him and kept making eyes like subtle eyes,” she told the outlet, adding she knew he was the one “straight away”.

“They say you kind of know when you know, and yeah, I think I knew straight away. He ticks every box.

“I’m very blessed; I’m very lucky. He’s a beautiful boy.”

The split came during a difficult time for Molan, who has been a sports broadcaster with Channel 9 since 2012.

In April, it was also revealed that her father, Liberal Senator Jim Molan, had been diagnosed with an “aggressive” form of cancer.

Soon after the shock diagnosis, Molan shared a statement on social media on behalf of her family, including mother Anne, sisters Sarah and Felicity and brother Mick.

“We wish to express heartfelt thanks for the thousands of messages conveying good wishes, thoughts and prayers we have received in the past few days,” the post stated.

“Along with Jim, we have been particularly heartened and inspired by those who have shared their own person cancer experiences with us.

“We thank every single person who has reach out. We are overwhelmingly grateful for your kindness.”
