Haunting images of Grenoble’s 1968 Winter Olympics site emerge
It was once the jewel in the crown of a city’s Winter Olympics, images now show this iconic site being overrun in the mountains.
Back in 1968 the southeastern region of France was booming as the Winter Olympics took hold of the city of Grenoble.
The city located at the foot of two mountains was swarming as thirty-seven countries descended to take part in the 10th Winter Olympics.
Now haunting images have emerged of one of the Winter Olympics’ most captivating sport’s sites.
The Ski Jump, situated high in the mountain side has long been left abandoned and is now overrun with shrubbery as it’s buried deep in the hillside.
Overlooking the entire city, the former ski slope is rusted and broken throughout with next to no measures in place stopping eager travellers from reaching the summit and potentially sliding down the ramp.
The present day images of the site paint an eerie image and show the stark contrast to the city which once hosted one of the biggest events on the globe.
The 1968 Winter Olympics opened in Grenoble in early February, they’re remembered as the first time the International Olympic Committee ever ordered drug and gender testing of competing athletes.
Frenchman Jean-Claude Kelly became the biggest name to emerge from the Games, collecting three gold medals and helping the Winter Olympics bounce back to relevance around the world.
What was once the pinnacle of the Winter Olympics has been left to nothing more than a grand palace for wildlife to life and nature to take over.
The haunting images of the crumbled and desolate site follow a similar line to that of more recent Olympic Games.
Athens hosted the summer Olympic Games in 2004, but just over 10 years on from when the majestic city played host to some of the world’s greatest sporting events it was left deteriorating.
Beijing faced the same fate following the 2008 summer Olympics. China was hailed for staging an incredible show for the entire world to enjoy thanks to a combination of incredible architectural feats and excellent organisation.
Again however, 10 years on, the seriously impressive stadiums were left in a barren and overrun state.
All the eyes in the world tune in when the Olympics come around, but the billions of dollars spent are left in rue once the attention leaves town.
