Channel Nine’s Tony Jones roasts co-hosts in perfect revenge

CHANNEL Nine’s Tony Jones has copped it on live TV all year, but today he gave it back — and nobody was spared.

Bec Judd's awkward farewell

BE CAREFUL who you tease, because it could come back to bite you on national television.

We all know that guy in a group of mates who cops the brunt of everyone’s banter.

For the crew at Channel Nine’s Sunday Footy Show, it’s easy to see who plays the role of chief victim. Veteran sports journalist Tony Jones has copped a beating from his co-hosts all year, repeatedly being referred to as “Chompers” after appearing on the show with a fresh set of pearly whites following some serious dental work.

Jones has been a constant target of live-TV ribbing after an awkward exchange with Nine’s Rebecca Judd in 2016. Jones attempted to kiss his co-host goodbye as she pulled away, making for an excruciating 10 seconds of viewing before an ad-break — and the 55-year-old is still yet to live it down.

On Sunday morning’s edition of the Footy Show, Jones interrupted former AFL star Billy Brownless, forcing his co-host back to his seat as he prepared for the smackdown of all smackdowns.

“You go and plonk your fat bum on that seat there,” Jones said. “Because I’ve copped an endless amount of crap from you blokes this year. This is me getting my own back, this is Tony’s list.

“Let’s start with Nathan (Brown).”

Footage rolled on the screen of Brown eating a pie in a strange manner. “This is what I have to put up with,” Jones said. “Here we have (him) eating a pie with a pen. Could you get any more bogan-ish than that? Could it get any grubbier or grimier than that?”

Jones continued to roast Brown, highlighting his poor performances for the Bulldogs and the Tigers in his final seasons with each club.

“My guess once they gave you the arse, mate, they both flourished,” he said.

Brownless was next on the 55-year-old’s hit list.

“When we think of Billy we think of the ‘B’s’,” he said. “We’ve got Billy, we’ve got Brownless, we’ve got bald and beer in his fat belly. I gave you a ‘B’ for your report card this year but let’s maybe give him an ‘F’ for ‘fat’ and ‘froffies’.”

Former Essendon star Matthew Lloyd copped it for his columns in the Herald Sun.

“There’s one too many ‘I’s’, I thought,” Jones said. “You should be sponsored by OPSM. There’s no ‘I’ in ‘team’, ‘Essendon’ or ‘Matthew Lloyd’, but there sure is in ‘egomaniac’.

Award-winning AFL journalist Damian Barrett was the next man to cop a scolding for his monotone news reading, but compared to the rest of Jones’ rant, he got off relatively easy compared to his colleagues.
