The New Zealand-born 32-year-old suffered severe head injuries after he reportedly fell eight metres from the terrace of a shopping centre in Amsterdam.

The Federation said they would not be releasing any more details surrounding Leauma’s death at the request of his wife, who is travelling to Amsterdam from New Zealand.

“At the express wish of his wife, who is currently travelling to the Dutch capital, at the moment we cannot give more information and we ask for the utmost respect for her and her entire family. Rest in peace, Kawa.”

Leauma had been slated to play in Saturday’s match against the Netherlands, however his official debut was delayed due to administrative issues.

The Sun reports Leauma was believed to have been meeting up with Dutch rugby players when the fall occurred after the floor beneath him gave way. However, investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death are ongoing.

Prior to his death, Ordizia Rugby Elkartea – the Spanish Basque Country-based club Leauma played for – warned medical staff said the player would require more surgery.

In light of his death, the Mt Wellington Rugby football Club paid tribute to the star player.

“These posts aren’t easy to do and this one in particular is pretty upsetting as this club acknowledges the passing of Kawa Leauma,” the Mt Wellington Rugby football Club shared in a Facebook post.

“Kawa was an integral part of our Mount Wellington Premier side, great player and humble both on and off the field and we enjoyed seeing him continue to thrive beyond his time at our club.

“He will be sorely missed by many of our community and we extend our sincere condolences to his wife and family as they navigate this tough time in a foreign country.”

The Spain-based Marbella Rugby Club also thanked Leauma for his contributions to the sport.

“Today, rugby is in mourning,” they wrote on social media.

“Our sincere condolences from the entire Marbella Rugby Club to Kawa Leauma’s family and friends and to the Spanish Rugby Federation.

“Rest in peace, Kawa Leauma, thank you for contributing so much.”
