The daughter of Australian sporting icon Cathy Freeman is following in her mother’s footsteps, turning heads during a school athletics event a local Murrumbeena athletics track.

In footage obtained by The Herald Sun, the 11-year-old is seen sprinting ahead of her classmates in a 200m dash, crossing the finish line comfortably ahead of her fellow competitiors in first.

According to the News Corp report, she competed in the 100m sprint, 200m, relay and high jump at the school athletics carnival.

Her relaxed running style quickly drew comparisons to her mother, who famously won gold in the women’s 400m sprint the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

In front of 112,000 adoring fans at Olympic Stadium, Freeman cemented her name in Australian sporting folklore by clinching a historic gold medal

But immediately after crossing the finish line, when TV cameras caught her looking to the side then shaking her head, there was more agony than ecstasy for Freeman.

She actually stole a glance at her time and was disappointed she didn’t run faster.

“Another thing that burns away at me is I know I could have run faster than what I actually have, but that’s fine,” Freeman told The Howie Games.

“I actually crossed the line, looked across at the time — 49.11 (seconds) — I was immediately disappointed because I would have loved to have run 48 (seconds).

“I just remember leaning over, putting my hands around my knees and just shaking my head.

“I was not happy.

“It’s a mighty occasion. I don’t mean to sound like a Debbie Downer, but that’s just who I am.”

She retired from competitive athletics a few years later.

Freeman, who is married to stockbroker James Murch, is famously private about her personal life.

But when she was an infant, Freeman said of her daughter: “She tests me, she stretches me, she brings out the worst in me but she just brings out all of who I am.

“It’s a little bit, oh my gosh, I’m not ever really ready for that. Parenthood’s tough, but I’m loving every single second of it even when I feel completely powerless.”

In November last year, Freeman achieved legend status in the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.
