Canberra Casino attempt to slash beer prices for the Hayne Plane
CANBERRA Casino thought they had come up with a brilliant plan to honour Jarryd Hayne’s NFL debut. However as it turns out, their plan was slightly illegal.
IF you thought Australia couldn’t possibly extend the degree of their Jarryd Hayne obsession any further, you were wrong.
The Canberra Casino announced last week they would be dramatically slashing their liquor prices in celebration of Hayne’s debut in a regular season game for the San Francisco 49ers.
The Casino posted the promotion on their Facebook page last Thursday, claiming they would be selling draught beers for 49 cents for the duration of the 49ers game.
Unfortunately for Canberrans, the promo was in violation of current liquor licencing regulations and had to be scrapped.
Instead, the Casino announced they will be taking 49 per cent off draught beer for the first two hours of the game, as well as providing an abundance of “hot snacks” on the house.
Canberra Casino CEO Geoff Andres publicly apologised for the promotional mix up.
Describing himself as an “avid” 49ers fan, Andres took full responsibility for the Casino’s blunder.
“I came up with an idea of selling 49 cent beer as a way to have some fun with his debut in the NFL,” Andres said.
“It turns out that my idea is not allowed within the guidelines of our liquor license.
“I got caught up in the excitement of the Jarryd Hayne story and wanted to throw a big party.”
Canberra Casino’s vice president of marketing Rhiannon Bach claimed the initial promotion wasn’t a publicity stunt, but simply an honest misunderstanding.
“We were a little over eager and the rules for responsible serving of alcohol are a little open to interpretation,” Ms Bach told Fairfax Media.
“We went out big because we were excited about the Hayne Plane and didn’t quite understand and we made a mistake and had to renege on that unfortunately and go with the 49 per cent off instead.
“It was absolutely not a promotional stunt, just an over eager group of people that love the NFL and love Jarryd Hayne,” she said.
The 49ers first season game kicks off 12.25pm on Tuesday, when they play host to the Minnesota Vikings.
