US jiu-jitsu champ chokes out and holds down attacker in NZ cafe

An American black belt master has posted footage online showing the moment he choked out and held down an attacker inside an Auckland cafe.

Chris Bower was out for a stroll around the New Zealand city when he claims he was approached from behind by a man.

The Brazilian jiu-jitsu champion said the man had aggressively demanded money from him for his son with Bower backing up trying to de-escalate the situation.

As Bower attempted to walk away, the man in question wasn’t done and continued his pursuit as the American began to jog away.

As the foot pursuit continued, Bower asked members of the public for help and for somebody to call the police but no response from those nearby was forthcoming.

After more than a kilometre, the American ducked inside a cafe hoping it would deter his attacker and would allow him to seek the help he’d been asking for.

But moments after he entered the cafe so to do his attacker and that’s when Bower decided to flip the script on him.

In footage posted to his social media accounts, Bower’s detailed the moment and what unfolded as the two men tangled on the floor of the cafe.

“After a 23 hour flight to Auckland, New Zealand, I decided to walk the city,” he wrote in the caption for the video.

“A deranged lunatic charged towards me demanding my money. Not knowing if he had a weapon, I backed away to create space. He started to chase after me. I asked many bystanders, hotel, staff, and bus driver to call Police as some man was chasing me trying to rob me. Everyone ignored me.

“I decided to enter @cafeatbayleys coffee shop to ask them to call the Police. They were the only people to help. The man followed me into the coffee shop and attacked me.

“I blast double legged him, secured top side control, took his back and then choked him unconscious with his flannel shirt.

“While he was unconscious, I placed him into the top mount position until the Police arrived. Many bystanders initially tried to pull me off the man.

“You will hear me telling them ‘I’m a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt, I’m a trained fighter, I have control of the situation’.”
