Ash Barty downs a shoey in wild celebration at charity golf day
Reigning Australian Open champion Ash Barty has celebrated a trick shot at a charity golf day by throwing back a shoey.
Daniel Ricciardo would be proud.
Former world No. 1 Ash Barty has celebrated a trick shot at Mick Fanning’s charity golf day by throwing back a shoey in wild scenes.
In a video shared to Instagram on Friday, the 26-year-old is seen pulling off a wedge shot into a fishing boat beside the course at the Coolangatta Tweed Heads golf club.

A group of men hoisted Barty up onto their shoulders in celebration before handing the tennis champion a shoe filled with beer – she downed the beverage without hesitation.
The charity golf day, which also featured singer Shannon Noll, comedian Andy Lee and actor Luke Hemsworth, raised funds for those affected by the Northern Rivers floods.
In an auction at the event, Barty’s signed 2022 Australian Open final racquet was sold for $24,037 with a total of $102,691 raised, The Daily Mail reported.
In January, Barty sent tennis fans wild after getting stuck into a Corona live on air with Channel 9’s commentary team following her straight sets victory over Danielle Collins in the Australian Open final.
The three-time grand slam champion encouraged the rest of the panel – which included close friend and former doubles partner Casey Dellacqua and ex-tennis player Alicia Molik – to have a cold drink with her.
But former Australian Idol host James Mathison faced backlash after calling out Channel 9 for the beer stunt, claiming it glorified alcohol.
“Our glorification and glamorisation of alcohol in this country is normalised to the point where we can’t even celebrate success without booze on live TV. It’s bizarre,” he tweeted.
“Imagine if this was in Canada and the broadcaster hoisted a joint onto their new champion?”
But tennis lovers were much less critical, taking to social media to praise Barty for enjoying a hard-earned drink with her close friends.

Barty, who shocked the world by announcing her retirement from professional tennis aged just 25 earlier this year, is slated to play in a global golf tournament that will be televised across Australia.
The tournament — part of the inaugural Icons Series — will take place at the Liberty National course in New Jersey, America, later this month.
It’s a nine-hole team exhibition event that will feature some of global sport’s biggest names including boxing megastar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and England striker Harry Kane.
“She’s absolutely terrific,” Icons Series chief executive Thomas Brookes told the Sydney Morning Herald.
“She did a range session with Ian Poulter, who is one of our future captains, in September when she was at the US Open, and she had not hit a golf ball for a while. Ian said, ‘Just hit a few balls and we’ll see how you go’.
“She hit this ball, I don’t know how far. And he turned around and said, ‘You’re having me on. Let’s just take it a bit deeper. Can you do me a high fade?’ And she did a high fade. Then he said, ‘Can you do me a low draw?’ And she did a low draw.
“He said, ‘Oh my goodness, you are something else’.
“She’s got those skill sets within her locker. With a bit of practice she can get lower than a three or four handicap. I know she’s really, really excited to be playing in New York and she’s also really keen to bring the concept to Australia.”
Barty is a gun golfer – the Queenslander stunned Tiger Woods with her smooth swing in Melbourne a couple of years ago and loves hitting the fairways whenever she gets the chance.
In April, Barty eased into life back home by winning the ladies competition at the Brookwater Golf and Country Club in Brisbane’s outskirts. The three-time grand slam winner, who plays off a handicap of four, finished first in a field of five women — winning a cool $30 for her efforts.
But she will face some slightly more high-profile opponents in the Icons Series, including the likes of Olympic legend Michael Phelps and NFL star Ben Roethlisberger.
“I’m excited to be part of the Icons Series and I hope through my participation in the series that we can encourage more women and girls to participate in golf around the world,” Barty said, per the Sydney Morning Herald.
“The series is also a great opportunity for athletes to have an impact on local community and charity projects in each of the host destinations.
“It’s such a unique opportunity to have fun, test yourself and compete against the world’s greatest athletes in a sport that we are all so passionate about.”
