AFL squads for 2020 looking different as 69 players axed

AFL squads are already full of new faces as a combination of delistings, trades and retirements ensured 2020 will be a new-look season.

The AFL’s silly season — AKA the Trade Period — is over and clubs’ squads for 2020 are looking a lot clearer.

Among the biggest moves was Carlton securing prodigal son Eddie Betts, Hawthorn picking up former No. 1 draft pick Jonathon Patton from GWS, St Kilda trading for Brad Hill from Fremantle and Geelong providing a home for ex-Crow Josh Jenkins.

But while a host of stars have found new workplaces, the unlucky ones have been left with their careers in limbo after being delisted and hoping another club will come calling ahead of next season.

A total of 65 players have been axed across the board but all is not lost just yet, and St Kilda and North Melbourne great Nick Dal Santo had his say on SEN radio about who among the delisted free agents should be given a lifeline.

Dal Santo believes Richmond’s Jacob Townsend, who won the flag with the Tigers in 2017, still has a future in the game at just 26 and wants Brisbane’s Nick Robertson to get another shot because while he may not be a matchwinner, he can still do the one-percenters every team needs.

St Kilda’s Brandon White is another who Dal Santo wants to see stay in the game, saying: “He’s a really good ball user. They just need to find what he’s good at and embrace that and not speak about his weaknesses constantly.”

The ex-Saint was less keen on the likes of Billy Stretch (Melbourne) and Sam Murray (Collingwood), while Herald Sun reporter Sam Edmund said it’s unlikely 30-year-old Jeff Garlett will get another gig after being moved on by Melbourne.
