‘A hard one to celebrate’: Jackson Warne marks first birthday after Shane Warne’s death
Jackson Warne marked a bittersweet occasion by celebrating his 23rd birthday — and his first since the tragic death of his famous dad.
Jackson Warne celebrated his 23rd birthday but admitted it was tough to mark the milestone without his dad.
Legendary Australian cricketer Shane Warne died of a heart attack in March and some of the leg-spinner’s best mates were on hand to celebrate with Jackson, who posted a series of photos of the festivities on social media.
“This birthday was a hard one to celebrate but I was lucky enough to be surrounded by great friends and family to make it such a special weekend,” Jackson wrote.
“I turned 23 this year which is a very special number.
“Thankyou everyone for the birthday wishes and I will get back to all of you. I appreciate your kind words.”
Shane famously wore the No. 23 jersey for Australia in white ball cricket, before handing down the number to a young Michael Clarke because he loved the way the New South Welshman played his cricket.
Some of the photos on Jackson’s Instagram page showed him with mum Simone Callahan, sisters Brooke and Summer, girlfriend Kiah Broadsmith, grandparents Keith and Brigitte and some of Shane’s friends including ex-England cricketer Dimitri Mascarenhas and former AFL star Aaron Hamill.
Former England cricketer and Fox Cricket commentator Isa Guha commented: “Big love Jackson.”
AFL great Brendan Fevola, Ashes hero Mitchell Johnson and former Ironwoman Candice Warner also commented on the post.
Brooke Warne posted a tribute to her brother, writing: “Happy 23rd Birthday to the best brother anyone could ask for, you are one of the strongest and most incredible humans on this earth and I’m so lucky to call you my brother, your day. 23.”
