Wallabies star Len Ikitau’s golden streak to continue until 2023

It’s been the perfect four days for Len Ikitau, who capped off a memorable weekend with a fresh contract extension until the 2023 World Cup.

If his two tries against the Springboks last weekend wasn’t enough cause for celebration, Len Ikitau can finally pop the champagne after signing a contract extension with the Brumbies and Rugby Australia until the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

The 22-year-old centre has come a long way from when he was selected for the Wallabies squad last year despite having less than 80 minutes of Super Rugby experience under his belt.

Ikitau made his Test debut against France in July and has since played in seven Tests for the Wallabies.

But arguably his most memorable moment for the Wallabies came with a two-try haul in Australia’s stunning 30-17 victory over South Africa in their Rugby Championship clash.

With the rugby world still buzzing following his match-winning performance against the Springboks on the weekend, Ikitau penned his contract extension earlier today.

The bruising centre was delighted about locking in his future, but displayed his shy side when asked about his tries on the weekend.

“I’m just happy that I got my future sorted for the next few years, and I’m just looking forward to ripping in,” Ikitau said.

“It’s been awesome. Real tough, real physical, a bit different to Super Rugby.

“But I guess I was excited for the challenge and keep moving forward.

“I scored two tries, but they were team tries.

“I was there in the right place and I feel like I’m trying to get better each week and improve my game.”

Brisbane-raised Ikitau joined the Brumbies ranks before the 2019 Super Rugby season, and has been a mainstay in their starting line-up in recent times.

But he had to make do with learning from one of Australia’s star centres before he got his time in the limelight – a figure who had represented the Wallabies on 60 occasions and had made over 130 appearances for the Brumbies.

For Ikitau, playing and training with such a legend of the modern game in Australia had spurred him on to bigger and better things.

“Being at the Brumbies for a couple of years, Tevita Kuridrani was there,” Ikitau said.

“That’s someone that I looked up to. He’s done it all in that position. He’s been to World Cups, he’s played for the Wallabies. He’s a great player, and I wish him luck over there in France.”

Ikitau will hope to add the icing on the cake to a perfect week when the Wallabies take on Argentina in Townsville on Saturday.

The nations locked horns last year, with the result being a surprising draw on two occasions.
