Wallabies star Jack Dempsey left commentators in stitches after giving hapless opponent Angus Blyth a wedgie during Saturday’s match against the Queensland Reds.

The New South Wales Waratahs raced to a blistering 38-0 lead during the Super Rugby clash at the Sydney Cricket Ground, scoring with ease in the rainy conditions.

Early in the second half, a minor brawl erupted between Waratahs second rower Ned Hanigan and Queensland forward Harry Wilson, and several teammates joined the fisticuff.

Amid the chaos, Dempsey opted to abruptly end the confrontation by grabbing onto the shorts of Reds second rower Blyth and giving the 120kg forward a schoolboy wedgie.

Both players and the commentators had a giggle as Blyth readjusted his pants before the game recommenced.

“Jack Dempsey with the atomic wedgie. What a play!” former Wallaby Rod Kafer bellowed on Fox Sports.

“We haven’t seen that since Rocky Marciano … I think it was an Andre the Giant move.

“You can do that when you’re up 38-0, you haven’t got too many worries.”

Commentator Greg Clark also noted: “Angus Blyth saw the funny side.”

Dempsey has made 14 appearances for Wallabies since he played his Test debut in 2017.

Jake Gordon bagged a hat-trick as the Waratahs smashed the shell-shocked Reds 45-12 to reignite their season.

The previous biggest margin of victory by the Waratahs over the Reds in Super Rugby history was 31-0, a number that was blown out of the water by halftime.

It was their second win from five in the domestic tournament, and moved them into third on the ladder alongside the Reds, three points behind the Melbourne Rebels and seven adrift of the ACT Brumbies.

“Very happy with that. We got off to a hot start and kept the foot on the throat. The set-piece was good, our ball movement was good, so really pleased,” Waratahs captain Michael Hooper said.

“Our defence has improved out of sight in the past couple of weeks. It was a full squad effort to get that result.”

The Reds picked up a 32-26 win against the Waratahs when they met in the opening round, snapping an 11-game losing streak against them in the process.

And on a chilly night, the Waratahs were out for revenge.

“Credit to NSW, they came out all guns blazing. We didn’t come out with that energy and intensity that we promised and you can’t chase down that many points,” Reds captain Liam Wright said.

“They probably wanted it more, to be honest.”

For their next fixtures, the Waratahs will face the Western Force at Robina Stadium on Friday evening, while the Reds will host the Melbourne Rebels at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday.
