Towering lock Rory Arnold has been recalled to the Wallabies squad for Australia’s tour of Argentina next month.

Arnold, 32, will fill the overseas-player vacancy left by bustling centre Samu Kerevi, who will miss the tour due to his Commonwealth Games commitments with Australia’s Sevens team.

Former Brumbies forward Arnold has played for French club Toulouse since 2019, but recently returned to Australia for his brother’s wedding.

The Australians will play two away Tests against Argentina – who are coached by former Wallabies mentor Michael Cheika – as part of the four-nation Rugby Championship tournament that also includes New Zealand and South Africa.

Australia’s 36-man touring squad, which will be announced on Thursday, will also include uncapped Queensland Reds utility back Jock Campbell.

The 27-year-old Campbell, who was used at fullback, wing and flyhalf during the Reds’ Super Rugby Pacific campaign, was part of the Australia A squad that took part in the recently completed Pacific Nations Cup in Fiji.

Former Reds star Quade Cooper will tour Argentina after recovering from the calf injury that caused him to miss Australia’s 2-1 Test series loss to England.

Cooper had been set to start to flyhalf before injuring his calf in the pre-match warm-up to the first Test in Perth.

The Wallabies won that Test but Cooper’s poise and calmness was missed for the remainder of the series, with Australia losing in Brisbane and Sydney to Eddie Jones’ England.

The Australians have now lost five of their past six Tests.

Wallabies coach Dave Rennie said: “We have to be better. We’ve got a lot of footy (left). We’re three weeks into a season so we have a few things we need to tidy up heading into Argentina.”

The Wallabies meet Argentina in Mendoza on August 7 (AEST) and in San Juan on August 14 (AEST) before returning home for Tests against South Africa (August 27, Adelaide and September 3 Sydney) and New Zealand (September 15, Melbourne).

Rennie’s men then complete their Rugby Championship campaign with a return Test against the All Blacks at Auckland’s Eden Park on September 24.

New Zealand is reeling following a 2-1 home series loss to Ireland.
