Peter Bol breaks 800m record with sizzling run in Paris Diamond League

Australian track superstar Peter Bol has put the athletics world on notice after producing the fourth fastest run over 800m this year.

Peter Bol just missed out on Olympic medal finishing fourth in 800m final in Tokyo.

Australian running machine Peter Bol has broken the 800m Oceania record after a blistering run during the Paris Diamond League.

Bol fell just short of victory during the race, but brokethe record with a time of 1:44.00, taking 0.11 off the previous record – which he held.

In what turned out to be a scrappy race, Bol had to work through traffic during the second lap before he was able to find his groove around the final bend.

As the runners turned for the final 100m Bol clicked into gear and surged past his tiring opponents, crossing the line only behind Frenchman Benjamin Robert.

Robert pushed through the middle of two fellow runners in the dying stages and in a dramatic twist, was disqualified from the race. Meaning Bol was elevated into first place.

An appeal shortly after the race however was upheld and Robert was put back atop the timesheets and named the race winner.

Bol's time makes it the fourth fastest 800m recorded this year. After the race Bol said he was pleased but had hoped to give his trainer, Justin Rinaldi, a birthday win.

“I wanted to run 1:43 and give Justin an early birthday present for tomorrow,” Bol said.

“Came a bit short but stoked with the PB and national record.

“It was no surprise at all. We’ve built this new level of confidence and when training is going well there’s no reason why we can’t run those fast times and be competitive on the world stage.”

Bol was quick to credit his long-term training partner and former Australian 800m record holder Joseph Deng

“We’ve built this new level of confidence and when training is going well, there’s no reason why we can’t run those fast times and be competitive on the world stage. Training has been consistent, but at the same time nothing special. We’ve done no majorly fast sessions or PBs at training, we’ve been building strength and endurance. The difference is since Joseph ran his qualifier last week, the energy has been high and that’s a major benefit in itself.”

Bol finished fourth during last year’s Olympic Games, when he set the previous record of 1:44.11. After lowering the mark once again, Bol is full of confidence ahead of the world championships and Commonwealth Games.

“My goal for both Championships is to medal. Keep my head up, keep ticking off sessions and competing strong against any field. I believe medals are within reach.”
