Tokyo Olympics: 'Surreal' Aussie duo smash records

It took just two events for the records to start falling and our male and female Olympics swimming stars to put the world on notice.

While there were no Aussie medals on day one of the Olympics, some of our brightest hopes are primed to pounce on day two.

Australia's start in the pool couldn't have gone much better with Brendon Smith stunning  himself, qualifying first in the 400m individual medley with an Aussie record, before Emma McKeon followed suit in the 100m butterfly in the perfect start to the swimming program - despite a dead heat controversy.

Our Aussie 4x100m team then set the pool alight with a blistering swim, with McKeon and Cate Campbell still to come into the team, leaving use sniffing potential gold.

While we didn't quite get the job done on the road race with Richie Porte the first Aussie across the line in 48th, nearly 15 minutes after the winner, the Kookaburras survived a scare against Japan to open with a win and the women's water polo team, the Aussie Stingers, defeated Canada 7-4.

The same could not be said for the Matildas, who were robbed of a clear penalty before missing the one they were given in a 4-2 loss to Sweden.

On the tennis court, Ash Barty's showed no signs of a Wimbledon hangover, despite the weird scenes, while John Millman won through to the next round but Sam Stosur couldn't get over the line.

It comes after last night's opening ceremony officially got the historic Games underway, with Japanese phenom Naomi Osaka taking centre stage.

Patty Mills made history as Australia's first Indigenous flag bearer, but a Canadian commentator's awkward gaffe almost soured the moment.

Thanks for joining us on day one of the Games and keep reading to catch up on all the highlights. We'll be back at it again for all of Sunday's action as we keep you up to date with everything happening on the ground in Tokyo.
