Today we'll see more football, softball and baseball while continuing to track the latest Covid news as positive cases continue to ruin the dreams of athletes from all over the world.

Updates

Olyroos stun Argentina 2-0 in huge upset

They've done it.

The Olyroos have caused an upset for the ages, defeating football superpowers Argentina 2-0 in their first match of the Tokyo Olympics.

The Australian under-23 side went in as massive underdogs but got their noses in front when Lachie Wales tapped in a goal in the 14th minute.

Argentina was dealt a major blow just before halftime when Francisco Ortega was controversially given his second yellow card and sent off for pushing Australia's Riley McGree in the box.

From then on it was the Olyroos' game to lose and Marco Tilio sealed the deal in the 80th minute with a sensational goal from outside the penalty box.

Remarkably, Tilio kicked the goal just 30 seconds after coming onto the pitch as a substitute.

Wales, who was a late inclusion in to the Olyroos squad, was understandably ecstatic with the result.

"It’s an unreal feeling, such hard work," he told Channel 7 after the game.

"To all the Australians out there, it’s such a big moment in football.

"The opposition tonight, they’re one of the biggest nations in the world.

"Tonight we shocked the world and hopefully we can keep on shocking the world as we move on through the tournament."

Super-sub scores as Olyroos close in on victory

The Olyroos are closing in on a stunning upset over Argentina at the Tokyo Olympics.

Super substitute Marco Tilio scored a sensational first-touch goal in the 10th minute from outside the penalty box just 30 seconds after he came on to the field.

The Olyroos now lead 2-0 and just need to survive a few more minutes to complete a victory for the ages.

Drama as Argentina given red card

The Olyroos hold a 1-0 lead over Argentina early in the second half in their opening match of the Tokyo Olympics.

There was major drama on the stroke of halftime when Argentina's Franciso Ortega was given his second yellow card for pushing and shoving Australia's Riley McGree in the penalty box.

Having earlier been given a yellow card, Ortega was shown a red card by the referee and given his marching orders, in what was quite a soft decision.

The decision gives Australia the upper hand and means the South American giants will have to play the rest game with only 10 men.

Olyroos score early goal against Argentina

The Olyroos have taken a stunning 1-0 lead over their much-fancied opponents Argentina in their first match at the Tokyo Olympics.

The Australians had the run of the play in the early stages and were rewarded with a goal in the 14th minute.

Lachie Wales, who was a late call-up to the Olympics squad, tapped in a beautiful cross from Joel King at the back post in the six-yard box.

The goal was set up by a beautiful through ball from Harry Souttar.

Olyroos vs Argentina match gets underway

The Olyroos are back playing at the Olympics for the first time since the 2008 Games.

The Australian side's opening match against Argentina has just got underway.

Thomas Deng will captain the first Olyroos side in 13 years to qualify for the Olympics.

Coach Graham Arnold sprang a surprise selection by picking forward Lachlan Wales in the starting eleven.

Talented midfielder Daniel Azarni – who starred for the Socceroos at the 2018 World Cup – made a sensational start against Argentina.

The talented youngster made a dazzling run up the left hand side into Argentina's box, but he couldn't quite set up his teammate.

The Olyroos will be hoping to replicate the efforts of the Matildas, who got their Olympic campaign off to a great start with a 2-1 win over New Zealand last night.

Novak Djokovic's epic tantrum at Olympic training session

Novak Djokovic may be the favourite for the men's tennis gold medal in Tokyo but he will have to get his furious temper under control.

The world No. 1 has never won the gold medal at an Olympic Games and will be hoping to change that.

Djokovic had a mega tantrum during a training session with Alexander Zverev on Ariake Park Centre Court on Thursday.

During the practice hit, the 34-year-old smashed his racquet to pieces, as staff rushed to clean up his mess in the sweltering Tokyo heat.

It's unclear what prompted the outburst, but it may have had something to do with an epic sledge from Argentinian Juan Martin Del Potro, who knocked Djokovic out of both the London and Rio Olympics.

Responding to an Instagram post of Djokovic on his way to Tokyo, Del Petro commented: "I’ll be watching you! This time you have your chance amigo!", accompanied with some tongue-in-cheek emojis.

Having won the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon this year, victory in Tokyo would keep Djokovic's hopes alive of becoming the first player since Steffi Graff in 1988 to win all four grand slams and the Olympic gold medal in a calendar year.

Djokovic's campaign will get underway on Saturday when he takes on Bolivia's Hugo Bellien in the first round.

Athlete accused of sexual misconduct banned from Olympic Village

US fencer Alen Hadzic has been banned from the Olympic Village – because he is accused of sexual misconduct.
Hadzic, 29, is confined to a hotel away from the main US team as a direct result of the allegations by three women.
Epee fighter Hadzic has been branded by three women over incidents that allegedly took place between 2013 and 2015 and another in 2019.
The first complainant reported Hadzic when both were on the fencing team at Columbia University.
He was suspended by college chiefs for 12 months.
Hadzic is also accused of groping a different woman in 2015, also at Columbia, after he pulled up in his car and invited her and a friend back to his home.
Quizzed by USA Today, Hadzic denied the allegations, insisting: “Frankly, they’re untruths. They’re just frankly not true.’’
After being provisionally suspended by the US Centre for Safe Sports in June, US Olympic bosses were ordered to clear Hadzic to compete in Tokyo.
A Judge said: “I do not find it likely that Hadzic’s continued participation would be detrimental to the reputation of the United States or his sport.
“For these reasons, I find that the temporary suspension is lifted as not warranted by the facts and circumstances of the allegations.”
But Hadzic was ordered not to approach any of the three complainants and was made to fly to Japan on July 18, two days after his team-mates.
Hadzic said he had not been mixing, even at team meals, adding: “I didn’t know what the atmosphere would be like until I came here.
“But when I actually got to the training facility all of the coaches shook my hand and congratulated me on making the team.
“All of the fencers that I thought would be afraid to speak with me, all came up to me and said hi. Even the women.”

Australian Softballers get first Olympic win

After a demoralising 8-1 loss to Softball powerhouse Japan yesterday, Australia's softball team has bounced back to get its first win of the Tokyo Olympics.

The Aussie Spirit defeated Italy 1-0 at Fukushima Azuma Baseball Stadium on Thursday to keep their hopes of a medal alive.

The lone run came through a Jade Wall infield single in the second inning, which allowed Taylah Tsitsikronis to score.

Both sides struggled to get past second base as Kaia Parnaby and Ellen Roberts' pitching was superb as they restricted the Italians.

Barty's tricky path to gold medal revealed

Ash Barty will have to overcome a tricky draw if she is to be any chance for the gold medal in Tokyo.

A few eyebrows were raised when technology firm Gracenote excluded the Australian from the tennis medals in its predictions released earlier this week.

But Barty will definitely be up against it after the official tennis draw was revealed on Thursday.

The 25-year-old will face Spanish world No.48 Sara Sorribes Tormo on Saturday.

Ash Barty will have to overcome a tough draw on her quest for Olympic gold.

The newly-crowned Wimbledon champion would then come up against French Open finalist Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the third round, before a possible date with Roland Garros champion Barbora Krejcikova in the quarter-finals.

If Barty makes it that far, she could play either Garbine Muguruza or world No.3 Aryna Sabalenka in a blockbuster semi-final.

And a mouth-watering clash with Japanese star Naomi Osaka would await Barty in the final.

Aussie Softball team make promising start against Italy

Australia's Softball team has made a promising start to its second match against Italy at Fukushima Azuma Baseball Stadium.

The Aussie Spirit lead 1-0 in the fourth inning against the Italians after Jade Wall got Australia on the board with a run batted in (RBI) in the second inning.

Poor old Taylah Tsitsikronis copped some accidental rough contact from her opponent as she was sliding into second base.

The Australian ran aggressively and just made the distance before Italy's second base gave her a nasty whack on the face as she attempted to put her out.

The knock was unintentional and thankfully Tsitsikronis brushed it off and was able to continue.
