Tokyo Olympics Day 3 updates: Swimming star's wild R-rated celebration

British swimmer Adam Peaty could hardly control his emotions after clinching gold in the men's 100m breaststroke on Monday.

It was raining medals for Australia in the pool on Monday, as Kyle Chalmers pulled off a freakish performance to rescue our men's team in the 4x100m freestyle relay final.

Australia were sixth when the 100m freestyle gold medallist dived in for the final leg. However, in one of the great relay swims, Chalmers, swimming in the anchor leg, clocked the fifth fastest relay split in history to get Australia to the bronze medal.

It was the fastest leg by any of the 32 men in the race.

Aussie star Ariarne Titmus has taken gold after beating American legend Katie Ledecky in the 400m freestyle and in a historic victory.

It looked as if Ledecky was going to take the gold for the majority of the race, but Titmus dug in deep and overtook her with a monumental sprint finish.

Her coach Dean Boxall went completely ballistic when seeing his swimmer pull it off, and the performance has been described as "just phenomenal" by Aussie swimming legend Ian Thorpe.

There was also some drama in the women's 100m backstroke semi-finals, with Dutch swimmer Kira Toussaint accused of an "illegal" move.

Later, British swimmer Adam Peaty could hardly control his emotions after clinching gold in the men's 100m breaststroke on Monday.

The Tokyo Olympics are over for the Aussie Spirit, who suffered a 4-1 loss to Mexico in Monday's must-win match.

The Australian women's softball team needed a victory to qualify for the Bronze Medal match Canada, but will instead finish in the bottom two of the table.

This marks the first time Australia has failed to win a medal for softball at the Olympics.

Several members of the Spirit were spotted in tears on the pitch after the defeat, struggling to hide their emotions.

Australian swimmers Maddy Gough and Kiah Melverton have both qualified for the first every women's 1500m freestyle Olympic final, registering times of 15:55.81 and 15:58.96 in the heats respectively.

Both Olympic debutants will race alongside American superstar Katie Ledecky in the final on Wednesday.

Heartbreaking detail in Tokyo podium snap

Eagle-eyed viewers of the men’s relay on day three of the Tokyo Olympics may have spotted something unusual in the hand of one of the winning swimmers.

US athlete Caeleb Dressel, who along with his teammates took out gold in the 4 x 100m relay on Monday, clutched a patterned blue bandana as he posed for photos on the podium.

The 24-year-old, who was the first of his team to swim, has carried the memento everywhere since 2017.

It belonged to his former high school teacher Claire McCool, and was gifted to him by her husband when she died of breast cancer in 2017.

Australian swimmers David Morgan and Matthew Temple have unfortunately both failed to qualify for the men's 200m butterfly semi-finals.

Temple placed 18th with a time of 1:56.25, while Morgan was 35th with 2:00.27.

“I just died – I’m bitterly disappointed with that,” Morgan said after the race, as reported by NewsCorp.

“You don’t come to an Olympic Games and swim that slowly. I’ve got to figure out why that went so bad.

“I’m not really too sure, I’ll have to look at it again.

“I’ll bounce back – you get knocked down, you get back up again.”
