Pop singer Cody Simpson has shared footage of the beautiful moment he was told he would represent Australia for the first time at this year’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Simpson qualified for the Dolphins squad after his third-placed finish in the men’s 100m butterfly final at the national trails, a remarkable achievement for someone who only returned to swimming 18 months ago after 10 years out of the pool.

“I’m through the roof to be honest. I was holding my breath all day, all week. It’s such a relief to finally have that confirmation and to be going,” Simpson told Amazon Prime Video on Sunday.

“When I got the text I was sitting there in my seat and I just sunk down and started hugging everyone I saw.

“It hasn’t sunk in yet to be honest. It may not feel real until I’m on the blocks in England. I’m lost for words.

“I’ve already made so many amazing new friends and I’m excited for the new experiences to come. Hopefully this is the first of a few.”

However, the Queenslander missed selection for the FINA World Championships in Budapest after Olympic gold medallist Kyle Chalmers reconsidered his decision to skip the event.

On Monday afternoon, Simpson shared a video to Instagram of the moment he received a text message informing him that he had qualified for the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

The 25-year-old was sitting alongside Olympic champion Emma McKeon at the time, and the couple embraced for a warm hug.

Simpson couldn’t wipe the smile from his face.

“Last night I was selected to represent Australia at my first Commonwealth Games,” he wrote on Instagram.

“I was holding my breath all week after the 100m fly final and this is the moment I found out. If you’d have told me two years ago when I had started training in a backyard pool during lockdown that I’d be here today, I don’t know if I’d have believed you.”

Simpson also shared an image of the text message to his Instagram Story.

“Congratulations on your selection to Australian Dolphins Commonwealth Games in Birmingham,” it began.

“Please make your way immediately to the marshalling room for the team announcement.

“Post announcement you, your coach and your family are welcome to join swimming Australia upstairs for drinks/food to celebrate as a team our biggest supporters.”

Meanwhile, Chalmers missed Sunday evening’s team announcements in Adelaide, citing mental health concerns.

Simpson was asked about his new relationship with McKeon by Karl Stefanovic on Channel 9’s Today on Monday morning, but didn’t take the bait.

Stefanovic: “I can’t go anywhere further than asking you about Emma. How are things on the love front big fella, hmm?”

Simpson: “Mate, I’m here to talk about my swimming.”

Stefanovic: “Come on …”

Simpson: “It’s nice to be on the same team. We’re going to England, it’ll be a nice holiday.”

The funny exchange was lighthearted and although Simpson wouldn’t go into detail about his love life, he signed off with a smile, saying: “Love you, Karl.”
