Bronte and Cate medal a ‘dream come true’ for mum as well
SHE may have been 14,000 kilometres from Rio but Jenny Campbell’s nerves really hit home as daughters Bronte and Cate clinched their gold medal.
SITTING in her lounge room 14,000km away, Jenny Campbell was a bundle of nerves as she waited for her daughters to realise their common dream in Rio.
“I get nervous because I know what both Bronte and Cate have trained for and what they expect of themselves – you just want them to do what they have set themselves up for and what they expect themselves to do,” she said.
“They have had this dream for so long of standing together on the Olympic podium and it has come true – there are very few people that can say they have done that so it is a really special time.”
The mother of Cate and Bronte Campbell watched her daughters clinch Olympic gold from the comfort of her couch at the family home in Kenmore Hills, having stayed in Brisbane to care for son Hamish, who has cerebral palsy and is currently very ill.
She was yet to speak to her daughters last night but told The Courier-Mail the sight of the pair standing side-by-side on an Olympic podium was a dream come true.
“It’s the person that has trained alongside you, the person that you have been doing it with for so many years – it is really, really special,” she said.
While Mrs Campbell’s husband, Eric, supports the girls in Rio, Jenny spent yesterday celebrating with family and friends.
“It is my dad’s 86th birthday so he, my mum and my sister flew in to be with me this week,’’ she said.
