Rio Olympics 2016: Usain Bolt breaks streaming record in men’s 100m final
USAIN Bolt just can’t stop breaking records. His victory in the 100-metre final was not in the world’s fastest time, but he set a new benchmark for live-streamed events.
THE moment Jamaica’s Usain Bolt took out the gold medal in the men’s 100-metre dash has become the most watched 9.81 seconds of the 2016 Olympics online.
The legendary sprinter’s race attracted 369,000 live streams – a new streaming record which smashed last week’s epic Olympics basketball battle between the Aussie Boomers and USA Dream Team, which peaked at 342,000 concurrent streams.
Bolt’s 100-metre race lasted less than 10 seconds, but attracted 27,000 more streams than the Boomers game.
“That number for Usain will only go higher as we factor in the other sources watching on devices,” a Channel Seven spokesman said.
The 29-year-old sprinter, dubbed the “world’s fastest man”, narrowly beat American rival Justin Gatlin to claim his third successive 100-metre gold medal on Monday.
Shortly after the race, Bolt thanked supporters over Twitter and told Seven he was headed back to Australia to holiday with former Aussie track star, John Steffensen.

Adding to his impressive legacy, Bolt has seven Olympic gold medals, starting with his first world record 100m of 9.69 seconds in Beijing.
He then lowered his own benchmark at at the 2009 world championships to 9.58 seconds, which still stands.
Bolt will chase the golden double in the 200m on Wednesday and hopes to add a triple-triple, when the Jamaican relay team runs on Saturday.
