The Olympics has ended in a sour note with fans booing both teams during the handball final on Monday morning (AEST).

The Paris Games drew to a conclusion with the final few events taking place on day 16 of the Olympics, including an emotional bronze medal for the Opals in the women’s basketball.

Australia also had a huge result in the men’s keirin final in the track cycling at the National Velodrome with Aussies Matthew Richardson and Matthew Glaetzer winning silver and bronze.

The Men’s handball final also took place between Germany and the champions from the Tokyo Games, Denmark.

Handball is hugely popular in France and while the women’s team won silver, the men’s side lost to Germany in the quarter-final.

So many were disappointed to see the final end with a whimper as both sides stopped playing with time left on the clock, The Sun reports.

Denmark dominated the contest and led 39-26, meaning both sides knew their fate.

Germany, who were in the Olympics final for the first time in 20 years started passing the ball around with the opposition rooted to the spot and not even attempting to stop them as Denmark knew they had the gold wrapped up.

Substitute players and coaches began hugging and high-fiving on the touchline, with two players on court also embracing.

That sparked boos from fans in attendance before the Danes began jumping up and down in celebration before the final buzzer sounded.

All the players then gathered in a circle and jumped around in delight after winning Denmark’s second gold of the Games.

Australia’s medals on the final day took the country’s tally to 53 overall, including 18 gold medals.

The closing ceremony takes place on Monday morning.

Whispers of closing ceremony special guests have been uttered in Paris cafes over the past few days, so who’s it going to be?

Could it be the almighty Swift?

Tom Cruise is tipped to make an appearance for the traditional Games handover to Los Angeles ahead of 2028.

Ariana Grande, who attended gymnastics these Games, is another rumoured performer.

It’s four more years until the Los Angeles 2024 Games.
