Rio 2016: Mo Farah on his love of Arsenal after winning 10km gold medal in Brazil
MO Farah was in dreamland after his incredible 10,000m victory at the Olympics on Sunday, but it had nothing to do with his victory or Olympic gold.
MO Farah was in dreamland after his incredible 10,000m victory at the Olympics on Sunday, but it had nothing to do with his victory or Olympic gold.
The British runner is a devout fan of Premier League club Arsenal, who kick off their season against Liverpool later on Sunday.
Asked by Fox Sports Australia if he thought Arsene Wenger was going to sign a striker in the transfer window, after failing to land a series of targets, Farah misheard the question.
“Arsenal signed who?” he replied with almost as much excitement as he showed after crossing the line at the Olympic Stadium.
After the confusion was cleared, the three-time Olympic gold medallist replied: “I hope we do. Messi would be good yeah. Or Neymar, he’d be good. Let’s do it.”
It’s a step up in ambition for Farah, who had been happy with Jamie Vardy when the Leicester striker looked certain to go to the Emirates.
“Vardy will fit in well, he’s scored so many goals for Leicester and we need someone like him,” he told the BBC.
“He can play alongside Sanchez, Giroud and Welbeck. It is exciting.”
On the same night Farah was running at the Olympic Stadium, Barcelona ace Neymar was scoring a spectacular goal for Brazil in their Olympic quarterfinal victory over Colombia.
Last year Farah revealed the extent of his love for the Gunners, wanting to give his son their name.
“I wanted Arsenal to be Hussein’s middle name, but Tania wasn’t having it,” Farah said.
Arsenal fans, meanwhile, celebrated Farah’s victory and at last one, evidently desperate for a signing of any calibre suggested this.

And others who just hoped his ability to pick himself up after a fall and power to the finish line could be replicated, just once, by Arsene Wenger’s team.
Mo Farah should transfer some of that Champion mentality to Arsenal players
