Olympic gold medallist Tom Daley reveals the pastime that kept him sane during his Tokyo preparations

British gold medal winner Tom Daley has showcased his talent in a hobby that couldn’t be more different to his diving mastery.

How does the pressure to perform impact elite athletes?

Gold medal winning diver Tom Daley has revealed the unexpected hobby that kept him sane throughout his preparations for the Tokyo Olympics.

Daley and Matty Lee claimed gold for their impeccable 10m synchronised diving on Monday, beating their Chinese and Russian opponents.

Surprisingly enough, one of the first things Daley did following his incredible performance was humble himself with his favourite pastime – knitting.

He didn’t knit just any old thing, he combined red, white and blue yarn into a unique “cosy” for his gold medal.

On one side he wove together a Union Jack flag and on the other, a red dot in the centre of a white background to represent the Japanese flag.

The Olympian proudly displayed his handiwork in a TikTok video shared by the 7olympics account which received close to 100,000 views.

“Myself and my synchro partner Matty won at the Olympics yesterday, and I thought I would come on and just say, the one thing that has kept me sane throughout this whole process is my love for knitting and crochet and all things stitching,” he said.

“So I wanted to say thank you to all my followers for actually following along.”

He then revealed the newest addition to his collection of crafts.

“This morning I made a little cosy for my medal to stop it getting scratched,” he said, demonstrating how the medal fits perfectly into the handmade pouch.

“It all tucks in nicely into the little pouch so I can carry around my medal without it getting scratched. How about that?”

He was far from being the only one dazzled by the adorable creation, with dozens of fans commenting on the video, expressing how impressed they were.

“This is absolutely adorable! Congrats on that little goldie,” one person wrote in a comment.

“It’s very cute indeed, the Union Jack would have been difficult,” another said.

“You are so cute and not only an incredible athlete, but a wonderful person and a talented knitter,” a third wrote.

Daley will contend for another medal on Friday in the men’s 10m platform dive.
