THE AUSSIES MAKING THE NEWS

Mat Belcher admits his new silver medal — and not a gold one — could drive him towards sailing again in Tokyo 2020. The gold medal favourites in the men’s 470 class, Belcher and crew mate Will Ryan jumped from the bronze medal position ahead of the final race in Rio to collect the runners-up medal.

It was a double-dose of silver for the Australian sailing team with London champions Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen also claiming a podium finish in the 49ers.

Ken Wallace and Lachlan Tame have claimed bronze in the K2-1000m sprint final in Rio.

The Australian duo were courageous in defeat, climbing off the canvas from fourth position at the 700m before finishing third on the flat water of the spectacular Lagoa Stadium.

World champions Germany won gold, with world number three Serbia claiming silver.

15-year-old schoolgirl Ren Qian became the youngest medallist of the Rio Games with her 10m platform gold as Aussie Melissa Wu finished an excellent fifth.

Ren, the reigning World Cup champion, became the second youngest winner of the women’s 10m platform since Fu became the icon of the 1992 Barcelona Games winning the 10m platform aged 13 years.

Sam Willoughby and Anthony Dean have survived a day of carnage at the BMX in Rio which saw two-time defending champion Maris Strombergs and world champion Joris Daudet make shock exits.

Willoughby dominated all three of his quarter-final heats to complete a clean sweep going into Saturday’s (EST) semi-finals while Dean was just as impressive finishing second, first, first to also progress. Youngster Bodi Turner was off the pace early finishing sixth, eighth and fourth and won’t take any further part.

Crashes galore but Aussies power on in BMX

Four-times Olympic medallist Emma McKeon and fellow Australian teammate Joshua Palmer have been banned from the Olympic closing ceremony after breaking team curfew partying in Rio on Tuesday night.

Palmer was robbed of $1000 after he was forced at gunpoint to an ATM to withdraw cash, only found by a businessman at 2pm on Copacabana beach on Wednesday afternoon.

McKeon did not return to the village and instead stayed with friends in Copacabana without informing team management.

Chef de mission Kitty Chiller disciplined the swimmers today while every athlete has now been handed a 2am curfew for the remainder of the Games.

THE RIO LOWDOWN

US swimmers Ryan Lochte and James Feigen have been indicted on charges of reporting a false crime after Brazilian officials alleged that CCTV footage showed they had fabricated a robbery to cover a drunken rampage in Rio.

The footage showed Lochte, Feigen and two other American swimmers were not robbed as they claimed but tried to flee after apparently vandalising a gas station bathroom.

According to local media, the duo have been indicted for the charges and the penalty for false reporting of a crime in Brazil is imprisonment for one to six months or a fine.

He’s run a lot faster before but Usain Bolt got what he wanted — his third Olympic 200m title.

The Jamaican superstar was aiming to break his own world record of 19.19 sec but conditions were against him so he had to settle with a golden 19.78 sec.

“I just thought: ‘If he’s telling me to relax, he’s probably finding this quite hard.’”

Alastair Brownlee pinpoints the moment he decided to kick away from his brother, Jonny, in the closing stages of the men’s triathlon race. The Briton defended his gold medal from London, with his junior sibling upgrading his 2012 bronze to silver.
