Jess Fox, Mollie O’Callaghan, Kyle Chalmers headline Australians in action at Paris Olympics on day five
Australia has a huge chance of building on its gold medal tally when competition resumes at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Check out all the Aussies in action on day five!
Can Jess Fox get her second gold medal in these Paris Olympics? That will be the big question on day five in Paris as Fox looks to add the C1 title to her K1 crown from earlier in the week.
It’s a big night for the splash and dash in the pool with the Aussies having strong medal chances in the men’s (Kyle Chalmers) and women’s (Mollie O’Callaghan and Shayna Jack) 100m freestyle. Plus Logan Martin will look to back up his gold from Tokyo in the BMX freestyle.
Here’s just a taste of some of the Aussies in action on Wednesday in Paris.
JESS FOX
Fox will be looking to add another gold medal to her already remarkable tally as she takes to rapids for the C1. It’s the same event she won in Tokyo and with all the confidence of the world after finally breaking through for the K1 crown, it’s hard to see how she doesn’t become a back-to-back Olympic champion.
NATALYA DIEHM
Diehm’s story is one of perseverance with five ACL ruptures across her career including one just weeks before she competed at Tokyo. She’s fit and firing in Paris, and has snuck into the final so it’s anyone’s medal once it begins.
LOGAN MARTIN
He put everything into his debut Olympic campaign in Tokyo and came away with the gold medal. Martin has returned for more in Paris and had the third-highest score during qualification so don’t discount him adding to his medal tally.
KYLE CHALMERS
Chalmers is back and firing and looks every chance of recreating his heroics from the 2016 Olympics when he won gold. The Aussie produced a superb swim in his 100m semi-final to qualify second-fastest for the final. And from lane five, he will have a great view of the field and what he needs to do to stand on top of the podium.
MOLLIE O’CALLAGHAN AND SHAYNA JACK
Two Aussies are set to battle it out again for medals on Wednesday night as Shayna Jack and Mollie O’Callaghan go head-to-head in the 100m freestyle final. Jack was the faster of the two to grab lane five for the final, but O’Callaghan’s final 50m will put the rest of the field on notice as she looks to complete the Olympic 100-200m double.
PENNY SMITH
Smith is a fantastic chance to win a medal in the women’s trap shooting. She’s ranked 11th in the world and won a World Cup gold in 2023, but it’s an Olympic medal that will be in her sights.
TRIATHLON
Will the Seine finally get its shining moment on Wednesday? Both men’s and women’s triathlons are scheduled for day five with Matt Hauser the biggest medal threat for the Aussies. Don’t discount Natalie van Coevorden who has a point to prove after her controversial omission from the squad for the Tokyo Olympics.
