Australian sprint sensation Gout Gout is set to be one of the ‘biggest losers’ of the Queensland government’s blueprint for the 2032 Games, according to former Australian Olympian David Culbert.

On Tuesday, Queensland Premier David Crisafulli revealed the venues for the Brisbane Olympics, outlining the vision for the showcase event.

And while there were several big winners, with sports such as cricket and AFL ecstatic with the plans to build a new $3.8 billion stadium with a 63,000 crowd capacity at Victoria Park. the athletics world has been left bitterly disappointed.

At the 2032 Games, the athletics will be held at the new Victoria Park stadium, but the warm-up track is set to be torn up following the Games.

The decision has been met with swift and harsh criticism, with Athletics Australia seeking an “urgent meeting” with officials in a bid to have a new permanent track installed.

“We will seek funding to address this in the near future.” Athletics Australia (AA) said in a statement.

AA also went on to say it is “deeply disappointed” with the overall plan outlined by the Queensland government.

Crisafulli’s government has promised to upgrade several grassroots sporting clubs across Queensland but that is all the legacy that will be left for track and field athletes from the Games.

And two-time Australian Olympic long jumper Culbert said athletics is the ‘big loser’.

“Athletics is the big loser as a sport from a legacy perspective, so that’s disappointing for field and track fans, that’s for sure. Too often athletics get dudded,” Culbert told Nine.

“Swimming deserves a new facility, and not just swimming, but water polo and diving their own hallmark facility that can host world championships. Now that’s not really possible for athletics, but there needs to be a second-tier option so the sport can get benefit out of the Games.

“ … Swimming, hockey and tennis in particular have got some good legacy stuff out of this. What’s in it for athletics other than 10 days of a nice stadium? That’s sad news.”
