Gold medallist Chloe Esposito cheers on little brother Max in modern pentathlon
INSTEAD of lapping up the plaudits for her gold medal, Chloe Esposito was back at the modern pentathlon course — to cheer on her brother.

IT wasn’t all champagne and autographs for Australia’s newest Olympic golden girl.
Instead of lapping up the plaudits for her barnstorming gold medal, Chloe Esposito returned to the modern pentathlon course to cheer on her little brother.
And while Max, 19, didn’t earn a medal, he finished a very respectable seventh place in his first Olympics — the same position his big sister came in London four years ago.
An emotional Chloe said the family connection — the pair’s father Daniel is their coach — was a big part of her win on the weekend.
“It’s been a tough four years since London and Max and I, we have trained so hard, but it just hasn’t been us, its been a whole team effort,” she said.
Team Esposito has been spread across the world for the past two years, with mum Suzanne staying behind with daughter Emily to run the family’s western Sydney swim school while Chloe, Max and Daniel were based in Hungary in order to train.
Chloe’s win was Australia’s first medal in modern pentathlon, a relatively rare discipline here which combines fencing, swimming, show jumping and combined cross country run and pistol shooting competition.
Until Chloe’s win our most famous modern pentathlete was Rio’s Chef de Mission, Kitty Chiller, who came 14th at the Sydney Games in the first year women were included in Olympic competition.
And Chiller joined Chloe in a sometimes teary press conference to describe her as the ultimate Olympian.
“I am sorry I am getting emotional,” she said.
“But I know how hard these kids have worked. I know how hard the whole family has worked, how much they have sacrificed and invested in this.
“Everything that we set out this (Australian) team to be in terms of pride, humility, excellence: the whole Esposito family has exhibited that from day one.”
