German athlete’s blunt answer to teammate controversy in Paris
Controversy erupted between three German athletes in Paris with one delivering a blunt response to the ongoing drama between them.
German athlete Alica Schmidt wasn’t in the mood to talk about the drama that unfolded within the country’s relay team.
Schmidt found herself in the centre of the controversy when she was selected to run in Germany’s mixed 4x400m team.
Her inclusion in the team saw two teammates blow up with Luna Bulmahn taking to social media while Jean Paul Bredau voiced his concerns to the media.
Bredau later apologised however Bulmahn copped the wrath of the German Athletics Association (DLV) who removed her from competing in the women’s 4x400m relay team.
Following the heats for the event on Friday night (AEST), Schmidt was pressed on Bulmahn’s exit.
“The decision was not made by us, but by the board and the coaches. That was probably the best decision for the team. We trust the coaches,” she said.
Not finished there, the German star was asked if she had spoken to her teammate since the controversy erupted when she delivered a blunt response.
“I don’t want to say anything more about the topic now. It’s about the sporting performance,” she said.
Bredau and Bulmahn train with Schmidt in Berlin.
It remains to be seen whether that will continue after the Olympics, with Schmidt insisting she is yet to consider her future.
“I haven’t thought about that yet. That’s also something my trainer will decide,” she said.
Bredau was also questioned about the training group, to which he replied: “I can’t say anything about that at the moment. We’ll see if we continue to train in Berlin.”
The German men’s team, which included Bredau, failed to make the final after finishing sixth in their heat.
Bredau and Schmidt also could not help their country through to the final of the 4x400m mixed relay.
