A Canadian superstar has completely destroyed the competition with an enormous throw. But something else entirely caught the attention of Aussies.

Hammer throw world champion Ethan Katzberg has become the Olympic champion, becoming the first Canadian to win the gold in the event since 1956.

The 22-year-old from British Columbia registered a massive 84.12m with his opening effort to leave his rivals trailing throughout the competition, ending up winning by more than four metres from Hungarian silver medallist Bence Halasz at 79.97m and Ukraine’s Mykhaylo Kokhan, who took bronze at 79.39m.

But while his athletic prowess was enough to send him home with gold, the youngster captured attention of Aussies with his solid moustache game.

So much so that some want a DNA test to make sure he’s truly representing the right country.

“Nah I want a DNA test, this man is clearly Australian” one person wrote.

“Canadians are Northern Hemisphere Australians. Request denied,” one person replied.

Another suggested: “They’re just appropriating the Aussie male look.”

More Aussies claimed he didn’t need a DNA test, with one adding: “No need, that’s Toadfish Rebecchi” from Neighbours.

But Aussies weren’t the only ones claiming Katzberg, with another fan writing: “DNA will prove him a German porn actor from 1978.”

Katzberg’s first throw was an absolute monster, becoming the biggest winning margin since 1920, with his throw just 2.62m shy of the world record of 86.74m held by Yuriy Sedykh representing the Soviet Union in 1986.

The Canadian has been undefeated in the event since clinching a surprise victory at last year’s World Championships in Budapest.

Katzberg said opening his competition with a huge throw had helped take the pressure of his broad shoulders.

“Coming into it I wanted to get a good one out in the first round,” he told AFP.

“For it to be 84 was a really good feeling and then after that I kind of tried to try to go for. Unfortunately I couldn’t get a little more out but I was I was really happy.”

Katzberg said he took up his event after watching his sister compete in the hammer.

“My sister was a hammer throw before me,” he said. “I started coming out to her trainings and I thought it looks like fun.

“So I picked it up when I was 14 And I just kind of did it for fun. It feels great to be here now with a gold medal.”
