Aussie skate prodigy Chloe Covell’s hopes of becoming the nation’s youngest gold medallist were shattered on Monday morning (AEST), with her heartbreak there for all to see.

A dejected Chloe, 14, wiped away tears in the women’s final as her Olympic dream slipped away after an impressive start in Paris.

After qualifying fourth for the medal showdown, the Tweed Heads teenager scored 70.33 in the street section and was sitting in the medal positions.

But last year’s X-Games gold medallist could only land 45.46 in her remaining runs as she attempted a series of complicated tricks.

In the end Chloe finished eighth, with her emotions bubbling to the surface as she was comforted by her father and coach Luke Covell.

On Nine’s Olympics coverage on Monday, presenter Karl Stefanovic said the young athlete should be proud of her performances in Paris.

“Oh, poor little thing she was so upset,” he said.

“She didn’t need to be. This is an Olympic Games.”

His on-air co-host Sarah Abo believed Chloe had a bright future ahead of her.

“She’s 14. First time here. First time chasing this dream. Plenty of time to come,” she said.

Karl: “I thought just the strength of a 14-year-old to get out there in Olympic Games, with all that pressure for the first time. Hey,” he finished.

Abo remarked that Chloe made the sporting gesture of hugging all her opponents despite her own disappointment.

“It should be said too no-one was perfect in the final. There were a few tricks that weren’t nailed by a lot of people,” Abo said.

Later when footage was shown of Chloe’s tears, Stefanovic said “I used to cry about everything.”

The youngster cut a much more composed figure in a gracious post-event interview with Dylan Alcott.

“I’m super proud of myself. I tried my best. You know, the crowd is really amazing. So that’s all I could do,” she said.

“I was trying to have fun. Just do everything to 100 per cent. Just try my best.”

Chloe thanked her “biggest supporters” in her father and family, and thanked Australians for their support.

“Definitely going to come back, better and stronger for the next one (LA 2028),” she said.

She was going to enjoy the end of her campaign with “so many lollies”.
