Australia’s Logan Martin produces perfection to win freestyle BMX gold

Logan Martin has created history, winning the first ever gold medal in men’s freestyle BMX with a performance of pure perfection.

Martin was last of the nine competitors to hit the course in Tokyo, but quickly stamped himself as the man to beat with the smoothest run possible.

He landed every trick with ease to lay down a score of 93.30 — well clear of second-placed Daniel Dhers’ 90.10.

“Logan Martin has more to give which is incredible,” the Channel 7 commentators said.

“That’s the run he did in the seeding run. He’s tidied it up a bit but he’s got a lot more.”

It left the rest of the field with no other option but to risk it all with their second runs — and Martin waiting to see if he’d even be required to jump on his bike again.

One by one they tried and failed to reach Martin’s score and when Dhers could only manage 92.05, it felt safe.

Japan’s Rim Nakamura was the final threat but after a positive start he lost momentum and the gold was Australia’s.

Martin’s second run was a victory lap and when it was finished there were wild celebrations.

“I have no words. It‘s still sinking in,” Martin told Channel 7 after the triumph.

“I came out here to be the gold medal. I came into the final with all the pressure in the world on me and I overcome that and I managed to win the event off my first run. I honestly can’t believe it. I’m so stoked.

“That was my safety run and I got it at 93.30. I didn‘t even bring out my big tricks, which is crazy to think. Anyone who has seen me ride knows I have a lot more.

“I’m stoked to bring home a gold medal to Australia. Thanks to everyone who supports me. I’ve honestly been overwhelmed the last few days with all the support. I guess the Olympic spirit has shown here.”

The three-time world and X Games champion built his own personal $70,000 ramp park in the backyard of his Gold Coast home to prepare for the Games.

The 27-year-old gave Australia its third gold medal on Sunday after Emma McKeon won the 50m freestyle and our women saluted in the 4x100m medley relay.

Earlier in Tokyo, Australian cyclist Natalya Diehm narrowly missed out on a podium finish in the women’s BMX freestyle final.

Diehm registered a score of 86.00 in her first run, which finished up as the fifth best performance of the day.

Britain’s Charlotte Worthington clinched gold with a phenomenal score of 97.50, while American star Hannah Roberts and Switzerland’s Nikita Ducarroz will join her on the podium.
