An investigation has been launched into alleged alcohol-fuelled bad behaviour by Australia’s Rugby 7s and football teams on their journey home from the Tokyo Olympics.

Japan Airlines has sent a written complaint to the Australian Olympic Committee following the inappropriate behaviour on the flight, 7 News reported on Tuesday.

The AOC confirmed it had been made aware of “unacceptable behaviour” from members of the rugby and football codes on the flight into Sydney on July 30.

AOC Chief Executive Officer Matt Carroll said while there were multiple sports sharing the flight, the rugby and football teams had taken full responsibility.

“While there has been no formal complaint from the airline, unacceptable behaviour was brought to our attention and I directly raised the issue with our member sports CEOs,” Mr Carroll said.

“It’s extremely disappointing but both rugby and football have told me that such behaviour is certainly not acceptable within their sports and have sincerely apologised to the Australian Olympic Team.

“The CEOs have undertaken to take the appropriate action and report back to us.”

After being made aware of the poor behaviour, the AOC held an immediate meeting with the CEOs of the sports that had representatives on the flight.

Mr Carroll told the CEOs to “immediately deal with the any behavioural issues of their players and officials,” a statement released by the AOC said.

Olympic Village antics

It follows reports a handful of athletes from the Australian men’s rowing and rugby teams left their Olympic Village rooms in ruins.

Damage was reportedly caused to rooms and cleaners were called in to clean up vomit.

The Australian Olympic Committee played down the accusations, saying only a few athletes were involved in the “disgusting” state rooms were left in.

Players reportedly disturbed fellow Australian teammates and athletes from rival nations still competing during their wild antics across Friday and Saturday night.

Ten Aussie athletes had to temporarily isolate and undergo Covid-19 testing after defying Olympic rules and partying with athletes from other countries.

Australian chef de mission Ian Chesterman said the matter was a “very minor offence” and all athletes returned negative covid tests.

Any punishment would be handed down by the athletes’ national federations, Mr Chesterman said.
