A 1500m swim, 40km bike ride and 10km run. All with a broken nose.

Australia’s Jake Birtwhistle has proven he’s Tokyo’s toughest man after completing the triathlon despite having his race ruined in the opening moments.

A farcical false start saw a broadcast boat still in the way of half of the competitors as they were standing confused on the pontoon, while the other half leapt into the water and began to swim as hard as they could.

In the mayhem, Birtwhistle copped a kick to the face that broke his nose, as he was one of the supposed lucky few whose entry was not blocked by the boat.

The Aussie had to swim, bike and run with a broken nose — a major hindrance to performing at the highest level.

“It was one of the roughest swims I have been in,” Birtwhistle told the Sydney Morning Herald.

“I have a broken nose. It was a foot (to the face).

“It might have even been in the false start so it was all for nothing as well.”

Birtwhistle miraculously managed to emerge from the bike section in ninth spot, but couldn’t keep up when it came to the run.

“We had done everything right up until that point,” Birtwhistle said.

“I was in the right position the whole way through the bike, up the front starting the run and I simply didn’t have it once we got on the run today.

“It’s disappointing. Everything up until that point was good.

“I didn’t feel terrible on the run I just wasn’t good enough to go with the front.”

Despite the broken nose, Birtwhistle managed to finish 16th with a commendable time of 1:46:32.

The race was won by Norway’s Kristian Blummenfelt, who has seemingly made headlines not for his athletic ability, but for his questionable attire that had the world scratching their heads.
