Aussie beach volleyballers Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho del Solar on track for impressive result at Paris Olympics

Reigning beach volleyball silver medallists Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho del Solar have continued their streak of good form in Paris.

Reigning beach volleyball silver medallists Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho del Solar are through to the quarter-finals and on track for another impressive Olympic result in Paris.

The Australians were neck-and-neck with Brazil throughout the first set of their round of 16 clash, with Clancy and Artacho del Solar eventually sealing it up at 24-22.

But they kicked into gear in the second, overcoming their opponents in a number of rallies and serving with more accuracy to win 21-14 at Eiffel Tower Stadium.

The result has set up a quarterfinal clash with Switzerland later in the week.

Clancy said the pair had been able to improve in the second half of the match by sticking to their game plan.

“We just trusted, we stayed patient and kept firing our weapons and we got the pay-off in the end,” she said.

She said their aim heading into the tournament had been to improve with every match, and Sunday’s game had been “another good step forward”.

“We know that there’s still a little while to go so just (it’s) time to recover and get ready for the next one,” she said.

After winning their silver medal in a Covid-safe arena at Tokyo, the pair said they have been thriving in the pumping Paris stadium.

“It’s just exciting to have fans here again - fans of the game and people who it is their first time watching beach volleyball,” Clancy said.

They are the only Australian beach volleyballers left in Olympic competition after both men’s pairs bowed out before the round of 16.
