MO Farah completed an incredible double in the athletics, winning the 5km in a canter, but the Aussies battled throughout a tough night. Re-live the action!
MO Farah completed an incredible double in the athletics, winning the 5km in a canter.
A week after claiming gold in the 10km, Farah eased away from the chasing pack in the final stages to back up his two gold medals won in London 2012.
Paul Kipkemoi Chelimo of the USA claimed silver, while Ethiopia’s Hagos Gebreiwet won bronze. Australia’s Brett Robinson finished a long way back.
Earlier, Australian Ryan Gregson created history couldn’t get on the podium following a tense and slow 1500m final.
After becoming the first Aussie to qualify for the 1500m final in 40 years, Gregson got out to a good start and set the pace early, only to fade late in the race and finish ninth.
“I had one moment of weakness with about 750m to go,” Gregson said after the race.
“I was in the perfect spot and a Spanish guy came in. I should have been strong enough to hold him out, but as soon as that happened I got pushed back.
“I was too far back. I gave them three or four metres at the bell and those guys close faster than me anyway. It was a crucial mistake and it cost me.
“750m out, I can remember the moment, it will probably give me sleepless nights. But I’ll be back.”
American Matthew Centrowitz Jr. came out on top in the 1500m, with Algeria’s Taoufik Makhloufi claiming silver and New Zealand’s Nick Willis winning bronze.
The USA secured victory in both the women’s and the men’s 4x400m relay to finish the night, with Australia failing to place in the women’s race.
The Aussies battled throughout, with Jamaica winning silver and Great Britain bronze.
In the men’s, the USA comfortably saw off competition from Jamaica in second and the Bahamas in third.
South African Caster Semenya cruised to gold in the women’s 800m, running a national record time to ease to victory.
Semenya was followed by Burundi’s Francine Niyonsaba in second and Kenya’s Margaret Wambui in third.
