‘You can’t give that': Knights star scores FIVE tries... but should this one have counted?

An NRL star etched his name into the record books on Friday night, but it came under controversial circumstances.

Edrick Lee's fourth try came with a hint of controversy.

Knights winger Edrick Lee scored five tries on Friday night, but it was his fourth of the evening that killed off Gold Coast’s chances and created controversy.

Lee, who will join the Dolphins next season, crossed three times in the first half, and twice in the second half, as the Knights crushed the Titans 38-12.

But it was with the game in the balance, Newcastle leading 22-12, when the Bunker sided with Lee in a moment that ultimately iced the game.

Lee found himself in some space with 15 minutes left on the clock, raced to the line, and dotted the ball down in the corner under immense pressure.

Referee Chris Butler sent it upstairs as ‘no try’, and replays appeared to suggest that his right hand had touched the sideline before his left hand placed the ball down.

“Oh, it is the hand that has done him in,” Fox League’s Dan Ginnane said.

“It is the other hand, the right hand is the problem, it is close. Hang on, you cannot give this.”

But as replays continued on, Ginnane admitted: “The longer this goes though the better his chances.

“He doesn’t know Edrick. I know we want to see him get four, but you can’t give this,” Ginnane said.

Eventually, the Bunker found a way.

“You cannot give that. You cannot give that. But they have,” Ginnane said.

“Their pictures are better than ours... I think they’ve got the 4K at the Bunker.”

Lee becomes the first player in Knights history to register five tries in one game.

Lee, whose last hat-trick came 10 years ago, was only too happy to accept the gift, and tallied one more for good luck with five minutes left as he became the first Knights player ever to score five tries in a single game.
