Souths’ gritty win soured by ‘devastating’ Tyrone Munro development

Wayne Bennett’s return to South Sydney got off to the ideal start picking up a win over the Dolphins, but the good news ends there.

Another horror injury for the Rabbitohs

Wayne Bennett’s return as South Sydney boss was overall a successful one as the Bunnies scraped past the Dolphins 16-14 on Friday night, but it appears to have come at a serious cost.

Before a ball was kicked this season, the master coach lost arguably his two most crucial players, captain Cameron Murray and star fullback Latrell Mitchell.

Murray ruptured his Achilles in training which will see him miss most if not all of the 2025 NRL season, while Mitchell sustained a hamstring injury which will result in him being sidelined for around two months.

But Souths’ injury crisis appears to have got even worse, with young winger Tyrone Munro appearing to sustain yet another collarbone injury in an innocuous tackle in the closing seconds of the first half.

Munro starred in the opening 40 minutes, scoring two tries and proving to be a handful for Dolphins defenders.

But the 20-year-old did not return in the second half, with reports suggesting he may have broken it again, as he cast a dejected figure on the bench.

The winger snapped his collarbone in the 2024 pre-season, and then again against Cronulla in his first game of the season last year.

So if he has done it again it would be a cruel blow for the youngster who has failed to have a sustained run in first grade solely due to his bad luck with injuries.

“Oh no, that would be devastating. He hurt it twice last year,” Greg Alexander said in Fox League commentary.

While NRL Physio Brien Seeney said his bad luck with collarbones is unlike anything he has ever seen before.

“If confirmed would be his 4th collarbone injury in 2.5 years – 2 fractures just last season,” he wrote on X.

“Tough bone to protect in rugby league but can’t say I’ve seen anything like this before, feel for him.
