Wayne Bennett reportedly shuts the door on Latrell Mitchell's possible move to South Sydney

The Latrell Mitchell saga keeps rolling on over the silly season with Wayne Bennett apparently removing a lifeline for the NRL star.

Latrell Mitchell's future is looking as cloudy as ever after Souths coach Wayne Bennett shut the door on the NRL star joining the Rabbitohs in 2020.

Mitchell is shopping around for a new club after the Roosters pulled their $800,000-a-season offer off the table but so far he's been unable to find himself a new home.

The NSW and Kangaroos centre is still contracted to the tri-colours for 2020 but they are understood to want him gone by the new year as the circus surrounding his future creates more uncertainty by the day.

There's been speculation the Rabbitohs were looming as a possible destination for the Sydney-based star but Bennett said he is content with the club's centres and has no desire to recruit the 22-year-old.

“We won’t be signing Latrell,” Bennett exclusively told The Courier Mail. “We have enough centres. I am happy with Braidon Burns and James Roberts."

However, rugby league is no stranger to mistruths and Bennett has been deliberately misleading in the past when it comes to player recruitment. This year he categorically denied Souths had any interest in Brisbane centre James Roberts, but surprise surprise, the Blues star later signed with the Redfern-based club.

So just because Bennett says Mitchell isn't on Souths' radar, that doesn't necessarily make it true.

Souths are healthily stocked in the outside backs department and were more concerned with signing a middle forward to replace Sam Burgess after the Englishman was forced into retirement with a shoulder injury. The Bunnies identified their man and have reportedly signed Gold Coast star Jai Arrow.

Arrow reportedly told the Titans he had accepted a lucrative four-year, $3.2 million deal with Souths from 2021, but there is speculation the Queensland Origin star will seek an early release and make his Rabbitohs debut in 2020.

Gold Coast had been quietly confident that Arrow would sign a contract extension after the Maroons forward repeatedly indicated his preference was to remain on the tourist strip with the Titans. However, the club's worst fears were realised when Arrow told new Titans coach Justin Holbrook and head of performance and culture Mal Meninga that he would link with the Bunnies in 2021.

The Titans are devastated after tabling what they believed was their best offer to Arrow, reportedly a three-year, $1.8 million contract.

His signing is a massive coup for South Sydney and Bennett's comments may make life more complicated for Mitchell if they turn out to be true.

Last week the Wests Tigers distanced themselves from the Roosters as CEO Justin Pascoe revealed having no contact with Mitchell or his manager since withdrawing a rich contract offer for the Australian centre last month.

It was believed the club had left the door ajar to reopen negotiations with Mitchell, but Pascoe has denied there is another offer on the table, despite being in the market for a strike player.

Mitchell has also been in the headlines recently for giving an interview where he said NSW "went funny" on him and fellow indigenous players Cody Walker and Josh Addo-Carr after they refused to sing the national anthem in this year's State of Origin series.

Mitchell was dropped after the first match and accused coach Brad Fittler of not contacting him to explain the selection decision - a claim which Fittler has since rejected.
