Warriors sign Capewell as star’s immediate Broncos exit confirmed: NRL Transfer Centre

The Brisbane Broncos have lost a premiership-winning second-rower after Kurt Capewell locked in an immediate move to a rival club.

The Warriors have made a major move in the player market, signing premiership-winning second-rower Kurt Capewell effective immediately.

Capewell has inked a three-year deal which locks him in until the end of 2026.

The 30-year-old’s contract with the Broncos wasn’t due to expire until the end of 2024 but the parties involved were able to negotiate an immediate release.

Capewell joins the Warriors with 139 NRL games of experience over stints with the Sharks and Broncos.

He has represented Queensland nine times and won the premiership with the Panthers in 2021.

“Capes has played an important role for us over the past couple of seasons, both on and off the field as we laid down the foundations to turn things around as a club,” Broncos coach Kevin Walters said.

“He is a great bloke and a wonderful servant of our game, and he has made a big impact at our club in a short period of time since joining us in 2021.

“You won’t find many people who have a bad word to say about Capes.

“On behalf of everyone at the Broncos, I’d like to thank Kurt for all his efforts at the club and we wish him well.”

The Warriors confirmed the signing on Thursday with coach Andrew Webster lauding him for his work ethic.

“Kurt is a winner with tremendous passion and a terrific work ethic,” Webster said.

“I thoroughly enjoyed working with him when we were both at Penrith and I know from that experience that he’ll add so much to our squad and to the club in an overall sense.

“He totally fits the profile of the type of player we want at the One New Zealand Warriors.”

Capewell will join his new club in Auckland next week.

ROOSTERS LAND WALLABIES STAR

After months of speculation, the Roosters have confirmed the signing of Wallabies and Waratahs star Mark Nawaqanitawase on a two-year contract.

The 23-year-old will see out 2024 in rugby union before making the code switch in 2025.

The deal is a hit back at rugby union after the poaching of Roosters flyer Joseph Suaali’i, who will code-hop also in 2025.

“We’re delighted to have secured Mark’s services and look forward to welcoming him to our club in 2025,” Roosters head of recruitment Daniel Anderson said on Thursday.

“In the meantime, we wish him all the best for a successful 2024 in rugby union.”

It comes after Rugby Australia CEO Phil Waugh said the code is “disappointed” to lose Nawaqanitawase.

Nawaqanitawase was one of the rare highlights for the Wallabies during their underwhelming World Cup campaign and his loss is a huge blow for Rugby Australia.

Rugby powerbrokers reportedly attempted to convince him to remain with the 15-man code, tabling an extenion ahead of the 2025 British and Irish Lions tour.

But Nawaqanitawase’s mind wasn’t changed and his manager Andrew Fairbairn said his client was “emotional” regarding the decision.

“This has been an intense process for Mark and his family, which has taken some time to navigate,” Fairbairn told the Sydney Morning Herald.

“At 23, Mark feels now is the best time to stay in Australia, but have a new experience in the Roosters program for 2025 and 2026.

“Trent Robinson has a long line of success with working with rugby union talent – which ultimately was the catalyst in Mark’s decision.

“A lot of good people, including the fans, have been involved in Mark’s journey, which has made this decision an emotional one. We hope the door will be open for Mark to return to the Wallabies fold in the future.”

Nawaqanitawase played rugby league until he was 14 years old before shifting his focus to union. He has played in 11 Tests for the Wallabies and 45 games for the Waratahs in the Super Rugby competition.
