Tariq Sims on Laurie Daley's NSW Blues State of Origin radar
HE'S barely played a game in two years, but "a fit Tariq Sims" is near the top of new NSW Blues coach Laurie Daley's wish-list.
PLACED near the top of new NSW Blues coach Laurie Daley's lengthy wish-list is "a fit Tariq Sims".
The North Queensland Cowboys star is in camp with the Emerging Blues squad in Coogee this weekend.
He is training under the eyes of Daley and his support staff, including legendary Blues halves Brad Fittler and Trent Barrett.
Sims, 22, is the most dynamic ball runner in the NRL, but has been cut down by freak repeat injuries during his two seasons at the North Queensland Cowboys.
Sims fractured the tibia and fibula in his left leg in 2011, but still claimed the NRL's Rookie of the Year award.
But he only played seven games last year after breaking his leg in the same place in late May, ruining his Origin hopes.
While a settled halves combination is perhaps the Blues' biggest need, Sims would give NSW a great hope of stopping Queensland's seven-series win streak if he produces the form he is capable of.
"For us, it will be great if he comes back to full fitness," Daley said.
"A big unit, plenty of power and a damaging player."
Daley has clear admiration for Sims. He picked him for the NSW Country team last year and Sims duly responded, scoring two tries off the bench.
Daley said it was not a requirement for Sims to play long minutes early in the season to make the Blues team. He only wanted to see consistency and quality.
"He was on the radar last year," Daley said. "He needs to get on the field and play well. He needs to play some minutes and reach that dynamic form we know he can show and he will be right in the frame."
Cowboys captain Johnathan Thurston said Sims would be a long-term Blues player and was "training the house down".
