Under siege South Sydney coach Jason Demetriou has sensationally walked out of what could be his final pre-game media conference answering four questions before storming out after 27 seconds.

Giving off Marshawn Lynch vibes when the former NFL star rocked up to Super Bowl media and answered every question with “I’m just here so I won’t get fined”, the enormity of a tumultuous few weeks appeared to get to Demetriou who was in no mood to chat with the media.

All the reports are that he’ll be sacked after Saturday’s game against the Sharks, with suggestions Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga will replace him for the rest of the season, with Wayne Bennett tipped to return in 2025.

The Rabbitohs are 1-4 and anchored to the foot of the table just a year after they led the league after 11 rounds but missed the finals.

A scrum of journalists were at the team’s training base in Maroubra for the captain’s run, but they heard just 73 words before he walked back into South Sydney offices after four questions about his future and how he’s handled the speculation.

There was no time to ask about why Damien Cook had been dropped, how the club was handling Latrell Mitchell’s discipline, and what to expect from Jye Gray’s debut.

First question: You’ve had easier weeks in your life. How are you travelling given all the external talk?

“We’ve had a great week at training. The energy through the week has been outstanding,” Demetriou replied.

Second question: How have you been able to block it out?

“There are new blokes coming in. Jye Gray, Ty Munro and Davvy Moale’s back. I’m excited by the energy they’ve brought.”

Third question: What about you personally?

“I’m really excited about the performance. I can’t wait. The energy is through the roof. I’m looking forward to it.”

Fourth question: Do you believe you’re coaching for your job on Saturday night?

“I believe I’m coaching for a great performance this week, and that’s what we’re going to get.”

South Sydney CEO Blake Solly claimed this week the club fully supported Demetriou but the writing appears on the wall.
