SOME were gutted, others defiant, sadly none were surprised as the revelations of a suspected ASADA probe spilled across the streets of Cronulla.

With all eyes turned to Sharks HQ, fans queued to voice their disappointment and sadness at yet the latest drama to besiege rugby league.

"We've overcome plenty of hurdles," said 19-year-old Sharks supporter Peter Anderson. "But this would be a pretty significant one.

"It'd be gutting if it's true. We're a pretty tight knit community down here and we'd lose a lot of trust."
There was a tone of denial amongst the Sharks faithful, who were last night willing the rumours to be just that.

But for some, a confirmation would prove to be the final straw.

"We've just bought season tickets, the season was looking pretty hopeful," said Cronulla father Scott Penrose. "If this all comes to light, we'll be asking for our money back and I don't think we'll be alone."

His daughter, young mum Alicia Bennett, added: "There'll be a lot of broken hearts around Cronulla if these players get pulled."

A Cronulla lifeguard, boasting to his mate that he knew a lawyer connected to the investigation, mentioned one of the Sharks' most high profile players being "gone" before The Daily Telegraph approached him.

Without giving his name, he claimed: "It's what everyone's been saying around here for months."

But whatever has happened in the Shire isn't staying in the Shire for long.
