He may have spent one year out of the game but Greg Inglis is looking “ripped” while training according to new team the Warrington Wolves.

Inglis made the shock decision to come out of retirement in late May when he signed with the Wolves in what was the biggest recruitment seen by the Super League in over a decade.

While the coronavirus lockdown has kept Inglis in New South Wales, Warrington has sent him a fitness program to keep to and it seems to be doing the trick.

That is at least the opinion of the club’s chief executive Karl Fitzpatrick who says Inglis is already making a strong impression with his commitment to the training regime.

“He’s looking ripped,” he told News Corp. “He’s training the house down. He’s living on a farm and they have a gym and he’s on the rower.

“Warrington’s head of performance has sent him a program.”

Inglis admitted to facing early setbacks in retirement as he tried to maintain his physique but was able to quickly make amends for the slip-up at his home gym in Catherine Field.

“I let myself go in the first couple of months as most people do when they retire but I have had a lot of time to get back into it,” Inglis said in an interview on the Warrington Wolves podcast What Would Bevan Brian Say?

“At home (I’m) keeping light weights, a watt bike, a little dumbbell, not really getting into running yet.

“Just keeping ticking over and watching my weight, getting into running in the next month, or month-and-a-half or so.

“You get me to do a fitness drill, I will probably be two minutes slower than when I had a football in my hands.”

Warrington fans will be particularly excited to hear Inglis is feeling the best he has since his teenage years as he looks to end his career on a high having said he left South Sydney not feeling like he was performing to his high standards.

“The bottom line of it (was) — one, my body just couldn’t keep getting up,” he said.

“When I sit back and think about it, it’s going to be two years on when I come back.

“Two years on, my body is feeling fresh, it’s been feeling great and I haven’t had that since I was 16-years-old. Two years off actually gives the body time to heal.”
