Reports Broncos to name Kevin Walters as coach this Wednesday as Bellamy rumours firm
The Brisbane Broncos have wasted no time to chase down a new coach after claiming the wooden spoon with favourite son Kevin Walters to get the job.
Kevin Walters is set to claim the biggest job in the NRL and reportedly claim the Brisbane Broncos’ head coaching job ahead of former Cowboys coach Paul Green.
Walters is the Queensland State of Origin coach but The Daily Telegraph reported he had won the role ahead of the long-term North Queensland mentor.

Walters will be tasked with turning around the 2020 wooden spooners after a horrific season that saw the Broncos sensationally fire Anthony Seibold just two years into a five-year contract.
He will be officially offered the role tomorrow and announced as coach on Wednesday, according to the report.
The report said the decision split the Broncos board with Green the original favourite having taken the Cowboys to the club’s maiden premiership as well as a grand final.
But the Green faction reportedly agreed on Walters on one condition “that the club sign a director of coaching of the calibre of Craig Bellamy”.
Bellamy has been cagey about his future, although admitted he would look to step down as the Storm’s coach at the end of the 2021 season.
It was revealed on Thursday night by The Courier Mail Bellamy was reportedly offered a five-year, $5 million deal to head to Brisbane in 2022 as the coaching director.
He also said he’s not going to sort out his future until after the season ends.
“I’ve agreed to nothing anywhere,” Bellamy said when asked more about his future in his press conference.
Walters and Bellamy have a good relationship with the pair having worked together previously. Walters was a former assistant with the Storm and worked alongside Bellamy when he was the assistant at the Broncos under Wayne Bennett between 1998 and 2002.
“Kevvie was one of my assistants for a couple of years. He did a good job with us,” Bellamy told The Courier Mail and NRL.com.
“Just watching the Broncos a bit this year, perhaps they need a bit of a history lesson in what made that club great and why it was great and Kevvie would be ideal to do that.”
But as news of the Bellamy talks broke, Walters was left blindsided on Fox League on Thursday, needing to ask for more information on what had been published.
“I had my interview this afternoon,” Walters said. ”The breaking news on Craig Bellamy, that is news to me. Craig is obviously a tremendous coach … did they say more about when Craig is actually coming?”
When told more about the deal, Walters said “well imagine what the head coach is getting paid. Paul Green and myself will be very happy with that.”
It’s been a horrific season for the Broncos with the biggest club in the NRL going through a nightmare season.
Scandals, sniping from old boys, the coaching saga, constant speculation and criticism, and, of course, the first wooden spoon in the club’s 33-year history all added up to a nightmare season.
And after the club’s final game, supporters threw wooden spoons on the club’s training paddock.
On Sunday Night with Matty Johns, Mal Meninga said “I think it’s time”.
“It all points to that he should be getting the job,” he said. “It’s coming to fruition, he’s done his apprenticeship.”
