The Tigers have announced they will be redesigning their 2023 commemorative jersey “immediately” after using a stock image of American soldiers instead of Australian or Kiwi troops.

The jersey was designed to be worn during the Tigers’ Round 8 ANZAC Round clash against the Sea Eagles — but was met with heavy criticism.

Eagle-eyed fans on social media spotted the blunder and pointed out the soldiers were in fact American based on their uniforms and weaponry.

One called it “very disrespectful”, another called it an “absolute disgrace” and it was also labelled “an absolute joke”.

Another fan said: “Totally understand they are trying to do the right thing and thank soldiers etc. but do it right and put the time and effort into it if you want to thank those who have sacrificed.”

According to a statement provided to Fox League, the Tigers collaborated with the Holsworthy Army Barracks to make the design.

But now the merger club have apologised to those offended in a club statement.

“As a club Wests Tigers is deeply sorry if the use of this image has in any way offended anyone. This was never our intention, and we are taking steps to rectify this,” the Tigers said in a club statement.

“We have taken on board feedback from our members and fans, and we will be redesigning our 2023 Commemorative Jersey, immediately.

“Wests Tigers deeply regret any offence the use of this stock image may have caused and remains completely committed to honouring and respecting all those servicemen and women who have, and who continue, to serve.

“The redesigned 2023 Commemorative Jersey will be worn by our team in Round 8.

“These jerseys will then be auctioned after the match, with all proceeds going to our ANZAC Round matchday charity partner, Legacy.

“Wests Tigers would like our members and supporters to know that, as a club, we will continue to embrace the ANZAC spirit, this year and in years to come.”
