Broncos star Reece Walsh is set to become the highest-paid player in the club’s history after the two sides reportedly agreed to terms on a five-year, $5.5 million extension.

According to The Courier Mail, the deal will make the 21-year-old Walsh the NRL’s youngest $1 million player and link him to the Broncos until the end of the 2029 season.

Walsh was due to go off contract at the end of the 2025, but the superstar’s management had always planned to signed with Brisbane instead of testing the waters of free agency, where he would have attracted even larger offers.

Walsh is the second key Broncos spine member to re-sign with the club in as many months after five-eighth Ezra Mam inked a lengthy new deal in February.

With Walsh, Mam, Pat Carrigan and Payne Haas all locked down long-term at Red Hill, the next half-decade is looking bright for Broncos fans.

Walsh is set to miss the next 4-6 weeks after suffering a facial fracture against Penrith. This new deal will no doubt ease the pain somewhat.

The fullback has since responded to the reports, however, posting a couple of Instagram stories to state no deal has been signed.

Walsh posted a photo of himself and his daughter with the caption: “Don’t believe everything you read. No deal has been signed.”

He also uploaded another photo of him in action for the Broncos with the words: “I’m doin me. I’ll let you know when something happens.”

In small print lower in the second photo it also said “Someone give Kev my number he’s lost it I think” with a shrugging emoji.

After he sustained his injury last Thursday, Walsh had to be driven back to Brisbane, with his playing return unclear after scans confirmed the fracture in a head clash.

Penrith’s Taylan May was placed on report after the collision, which left Walsh with a severe cut around his eye just a few minutes into the rematch of the 2023 grand final at BlueBet Stadium.

Last Friday morning, the NRL confirmed May had not been charged by the judiciary.

The hit left Walsh bleeding profusely and he was forced from the field to undergo a head injury assessment, which he passed, before being ruled out of the contest due to his inability to see properly.

Walsh had to have stitches and despite hopes he had avoided further damage, scans confirmed a facial fracture that could sideline the superstar fullback for some time.

Broncos head of performance Dave Ballard said Walsh was taken to hospital and underwent a CT scan that showed a facial fracture.

“As a result, he cannot fly home and is being driven back up to Brisbane by our staff,” he said.

“We will be able to determine how much footy Reece will miss once the injury settles down and after we consult a specialist in coming days.

“Reece’s wellbeing is our priority and ensuring he is well looked after. We will get him safely back to Brisbane and then move forward.”
