WADE Graham has received top backing to become Cronulla's next captain, with Paul Gallen anointing the 22-year-old as his successor.

WADE Graham has received top backing to become Cronulla's next captain, with current skipper Paul Gallen anointing the 22-year-old as his long-term successor.

From a "young punk" who joined the Sharks two years ago, Graham has earned Gallen's respect and the NSW Origin skipper this week paid the ex-Panther the highest compliment.

In a World Cup year that could have the game's top players turning out in as many as 35 matches, Gallen is likely to preserve himself from club duty around the arduous Origin period to keep his battle-weary frame in shape for the end-of-season finale.

But with deputy Jeremy Smith now at Newcastle, Cronulla no longer have an obvious choice to replace Gallen. Graham did the job three times last year, when both senior backrowers were injured.

Gallen knows the role is his until his contract ends in 2015, when he's expected to retire.

"For me, Wade Graham could be a captain at any level," Gallen said. "Certainly, he'll be the next captain of Cronulla if he sticks around and signs a long-term deal.

"He's a future Origin player and if they're looking for someone who'll be around for a long time, then he fits the mould.

"I've got a lot of time for him and I also feel a responsibility toward him because I helped get him to the club."

However, Gallen took time to warm to the recruit.

"He was a bit of a young punk when he first came here.

"He came in and wanted to tell everyone what to do because he was halfback and I don't know if it went down too well with a few people.

"But he's really matured and he did captain a couple of times last year.

"He's a good talker and a leader at training.

"I've got no doubt he's a future captain.

"If he decides this is where he wants to be, then he will take over the role."
